Rules will not change in Supreme Court Bar Association elections now, SC postponed election reforms till 2027-28

The Supreme Court made partial changes in its order regarding electoral reforms of the Bar Association (SCBA). The court has said that the electoral reforms suggested on May 29 will not be applicable to the upcoming elections of 2026-27. It will be implemented in the elections of 2027-28. CJI Surya Kant and Justice K.V. Vishwanathan’s bench accepted the demand of SCBA and said that it would not be appropriate to change the rules during the ongoing election process.

Voter list for this year’s elections has been published

The court said that the voter list for the 2026-27 elections has already been decided. In such a situation, the implementation of the new rule may affect the election process. This year’s SCBA elections will be conducted on the basis of already decided arrangements. The voter list has also been finally published on 26 May 2026. At the same time, the cutoff date for determining voter eligibility was 28 February 2026. In such a situation, it would not be right to implement the order given later regarding electoral reforms.

Supreme Court had suggested electoral reforms on May 29

Let us tell you that on May 29, the Supreme Court had suggested several election reforms to increase transparency and accountability in SCBA elections. This included new eligibility to decide voting rights on the basis of regular appearance in the Supreme Court, two-year tenure for office bearers and many reforms related to the election process.

Formation of 5 member team for SCBA elections

The Supreme Court has also formed a 5-member team for the elections for the terms of 2026-27 and 2027-28. Senior advocate Jaideep Gupta has been made the chairman of the committee. Other members of the committee include senior advocate S.B. Upadhyay, S. Guru Krishna Kumar, Vibha Dutta Makhija and Dinesh Kumar Goswami have been included.

SCBA elections will be held on August 18

The court has also decided the election schedule. This year’s Supreme Court Bar Association elections will be held around August 18. The newly elected officials will assume charge by August 21. With this order, the Supreme Court has ensured that the current elections are conducted under the old rules without any disruption.
