Rules to eat food: Eating food on these special occasions is a great sin! Know the rules of the scriptures

May 28, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Eating Rules: Special importance of worship and fasting has been given in Sanatan Dharma. Both worship and fasting are considered means of attaining God’s blessings. On many auspicious occasions, fasting has been prescribed in the religious scriptures to please the Gods and Goddesses. Consumption of food is considered prohibited during fasting. In many fasts, water is not even consumed. That is, Nirjala fast is observed.

By following the rules of fasting, a person attains virtue. Whereas if the rules of fasting are ignored, the Gods and Goddesses get angry, which leads to blame. One should not eat food even by mistake during Ekadashi fast. It is believed that consumption of food on this day leads to hell and great sin, but apart from fasting, there are some special occasions in which consumption of food is considered prohibited.

Consuming food is prohibited on these occasions

At the time of eclipse: In Sanatan tradition, solar eclipse and lunar eclipse have been given great importance. It is believed that consuming food at this time is inauspicious. During the eclipse period, the negative energy in the environment gets affected a lot. However, the elderly, sick children and pregnant women are exempted from this rule.

Kanyadaan: Kanyadaan is considered the biggest virtuous act in Hindu marriage. According to the scriptures, after taking the pledge of Kanyadaan, one should not consume food without completing this virtuous deed. Doing this is wrong from religious point of view.

Brahmin and Saint Banquet: If a Brahmin or a saint has been invited for food, then one should never eat food without eating with them. However, fruits or light diet can be eaten.

Time of death: Food should be consumed when someone dies in the house or during someone’s last moments. This is considered a time of mourning and restraint in religious scriptures.
