After the new agreement between Iran and America, the politics of opposition and support has intensified inside Iran. Recently, a message issued in the name of Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei further increased this debate. After the signing of the agreement, Mujtaba Khamenei said that such statements or steps, which spread despair and distrust among the public, are tantamount to helping the enemies.
This statement was considered a warning to the radical leaders and organizations opposing the agreement. Soon after, President Massoud Pejeshkian and the key leader negotiating with the US, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, said that they would follow the instructions of the country’s supreme leadership and support the dialogue process.
Opposition from fundamentalist groups intensified
For the last several weeks, some radical media organizations, religious leaders and political groups of Iran were criticizing this agreement. He believes that making an agreement with America is not in Iran’s interest and it can cause harm to the country. These include ‘Kayhan’ editor Hussain Shariat Madari, who has been a critic of talks with America for a long time. Also there is MP Ismail Kosari. Iranian website Khabar Online said in its report that this is not just a general criticism, but an organized attempt to make the talks unsuccessful and increase differences in the country. In the report, government TV channel IRIB was described as the biggest opponent of the agreement.
Maulvis declared conversation as haram
According to the report, many clerics on IRIB gave statements against talks with America. Maulvi Ghulamreza Ghasemian said that talks with America are haraam. Sheikh Ismail Ramzani said that good relations with Washington are never possible.
The radical Pyadari Party is also criticizing this agreement. MPs and media organizations associated with the party are continuously raising questions on the negotiation team. However, according to the report, the protest is not limited to the Payadari Party alone. Many other religious and political groups are also against the agreement with America.
Ghalibaf warned that those who oppose the instructions of the supreme leadership may have to face a strong reaction from the public. At present, after the agreement, the voices of protest have subsided, but it is clear that there are still deep differences within Iran on the issue of improving relations with America.
