July 12, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Roti is one of the most common and favorite food items in Indian food. Rotis are made once or twice a day in almost every house. Hot and soft rotis enhance the taste of food, but sometimes the rotis become hard after some time of making them. This affects both their taste and texture, especially when packed for tiffin or travelling.

breads There can be many reasons behind early hardening. Not kneading the dough properly, not keeping it for sufficient time, baking the roti for too long or on high flame, lack of moisture and not storing it properly are considered to be the main reasons for this. Apart from this, leaving the rotis open for a long time also reduces their moisture and they start drying quickly. Let us know which easy tips can be adopted to keep the rotis soft for a long time and what things should be kept in mind while making rotis.

Follow these 5 easy tips to keep rotis soft for a long time

Knead the dough correctly

Always knead the roti dough fresh and add water as per requirement. The dough should neither be too hard nor too loose. If you want, you can add some milk, curd or one spoon oil while kneading. This makes the rotis softer and helps them remain soft for a longer period of time.

keep the dough covered for some time

After kneading the dough, keep it covered for 20 to 30 minutes. Due to this the flour sets well and moisture remains in it. Rotis made from such flour become softer and do not harden quickly.

Bake bread at the right temperature

Always bake the roti on a well-hot pan on medium flame. On very high flame, the roti can burn quickly and if cooked on low flame for too long, it can dry out. Rotis baked at the right temperature become soft and tasty.

Apply light ghee or butter on roti

Immediately after removing the roti from the pan, apply a little ghee or butter on it. This maintains the moisture of the roti and it remains soft for a long time. If you want a less fat option, you can skip this step.

Keep wrapped in a hot case or cloth

After making the rotis, wrap them in a clean cotton cloth and keep them in a hot case or a vessel with a lid. This maintains their warmth and moisture. Leaving the rotis open for a long time can cause them to dry out quickly and become hard.

What things should be kept in mind while making rotis?

To make rotis, use good quality flour and knead it freshly. While kneading the dough, do not keep it excessively dry or wet. While rolling rotis, avoid applying too much dry flour, as this can cause the rotis to become dry.

Bake the roti only after the pan is well heated and do not keep it on fire for longer than necessary. After baking the rotis, cover them immediately so that they remain moist. If making rotis for tiffin, keep them in a hot case or clean cotton cloth before they cool completely. Due to this they remain soft for a long time.
