
Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs George Kurien has resigned from his post on Tuesday. President Draupadi Murmu has also accepted his resignation. The President, on the advice of the Prime Minister, has accepted the resignation of George Kurien from the Union Council of Ministers with immediate effect, under clause (2) of Article 75 of the Constitution.
George Kurien is a leader of Kerala BJP, he was brought to the Rajya Sabha in view of the state elections. George Kurien’s tenure ended on June 21. After completion of his tenure in Rajya Sabha, he resigned from the Union Council of Ministers. According to a statement issued by Rashtrapati Bhavan on Tuesday, President Draupadi Murmu has accepted his resignation.
Tenure ends on June 21
Apart from the Minority Affairs portfolio, Kurien also served as Minister of State in the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying. Kurien’s tenure as Rajya Sabha MP from Madhya Pradesh and subsequently as Minister of State for Minority Affairs as well as Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying officially ends on June 21, 2026.
Not sent to Rajya Sabha again
BJP had already indicated that the party is not sending George Kurien to Rajya Sabha again. In place of George Kurien, BJP General Secretary Tarun Chugh was given the Rajya Sabha ticket from Madhya Pradesh. Since then there were speculations about his resignation. George Kurien was elected to the Rajya Sabha in August 2024 after becoming the Union Minister of State.
Poor performance in Kerala elections
George Kurien had contested from Kanjirapally in the assembly elections held in Kerala this year. However, Kurien’s performance was disappointing and he did not even get the votes secured by former Union Minister Alphons Kannanthanam from the same constituency. . It is said that due to the poor performance of the party in the Kerala Assembly elections, he was not nominated again for Rajya Sabha.
Who is George Kurian?
65-year-old George Kurien was serving as Minister of State (MoS) in the third Union Cabinet led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi from August 2024. He is a senior leader of BJP and has been a member of the party since its inception in 1980. He has also practiced as a lawyer in the Supreme Court.
George Kurien was born on 20 September 1960 in Nambiyakulam, Ettumanoor municipality of Kottayam district, Kerala. He completed his schooling in his hometown and then did his graduation and post-graduation in law. He took oath as the Union Minister of State on June 9, 2024 and took charge of the Ministry of Minority Affairs and Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying on June 11, 2024. Earlier, Kurien was the vice-chairman of the National Minorities Commission and the then Union Minister of State for Railways, O. Had worked as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to Rajagopal.
