The Delhi High Court reserved its verdict on a petition that referred to a fake viral report about judges and ministers taking part in a badminton tournament in London. The High Court directed that the video and other material related to this claim be removed from social media platforms. The court also said that social media companies will have to provide subscriber information and directed the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology to investigate as per law.
Badminton Association of India argued that despite giving clarification, this fake report is spreading online, which is damaging the reputation of both the judiciary and the game. On behalf of the Badminton Association, senior advocate Apoorva Kurup said that the viral fake news about the judges taking part in the badminton tournament in London is spreading rapidly and is also bringing bad name to the game.
This fake news is spreading rapidly: Solicitor General
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said that he had already received its copy and this fake news is spreading rapidly. Justice Tejas Karia asked the lawyers to remove the objections on the petitions. The matter will be listed today itself. Senior advocate Apoorva Kurup pointed to several posts and videos in which it was claimed that the judge and the minister were present at that event.
He said that this game is being presented as a bad activity. This is an insult to the judiciary, which is a matter of great concern as a citizen. At the same time, it is also an insult to the game, making fun of it. SG Tushar Mehta said that the government has fact checked. This is completely false and misleading. The pictures shared on social media, showing CJI Surya Kant, Justice Vikram Nath and Union Ministers Arjun Ram Meghwal and Kiren Rijiju, are from 2025.
Did not participate in any badminton tournament in London: SG
SG said, he did not participate in any badminton tournament in London. The CJI was in the UK, he met the Chief Justice of the UK and participated in some events. The minister did not go to London during this period and the allegation that 75 judges were present there is also false. It should be investigated and the person who started it should be found out. The court can issue a notice and order an investigation.
Advocate Kurup said that there should be some guidelines because this may happen again in the future. On this, the SG said that it is being spread everywhere that the government had taken 75 judges to London for fun. The common man believes what is written. After listening to all the parties, the court said that we will issue the order.
