
Every year the situation in Delhi becomes very bad during the rainy season. The problem of waterlogging starts happening at many places. Along with this, flood like situations also arise. In such a situation, the Rekha government has already started gearing up to ensure that flood-like situation does not arise in the capital during monsoon. The government has prepared a complete plan for this.
Rekha government has issued Flood Control Order 2026 for flood control. In which instructions have been given to strengthen the drainage system in various areas of Delhi. Also, areas prone to waterlogging during monsoon have been identified. Taking a lesson after the 2023 flood in Delhi and the water level of Yamuna reaching record level, monitoring of pumping stations, drains and barrages has been intensified. To deal with waterlogging, a multi-agency plan has been implemented and the responsibility has been assigned to MCD, PWD, DDA and DJB.
Central flood control room will be active 24X7
Delhi government has decided to keep the Central Flood Control Room active 24×7 till 15 October 2026. This control room will ensure coordination between all departments and quick action in case of emergency.
High-level Monitoring Committee
To monitor flood control in Delhi, an Apex Committee has been constituted under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, in which ministers of the concerned department, Chief Secretary, Police, if necessary, Army, senior officers of various agencies including DDA, MCD, DJB will be included.
According to the information, in case of increase in water level in Yamuna River and Najafgarh Drain in Delhi, warning will be issued in three phases.
Warning in three stages
Yamuna River (based on Hathnikund Barrage discharge)
- 1 lakh cusecs: first warning
- 3 lakh cusecs: second warning
- 5 lakh cusecs: third warning
Najafgarh Drain (Masani Barrage)
- 35,000 cusecs: first alert
- 70,000 cusecs: second alert
- 1 lakh cusecs: highest alert
identification of sensitive areas
More than 20 sensitive places including Yamuna embankments, regulators and pumping stations have been identified. Engineering teams and disaster management personnel will be deployed at these places so that any risk can be avoided in time.
Relief and rescue preparations in 13 districts
Sector-wise committees have been formed in all the 13 districts of Delhi. Control rooms, relief camps, boats, pump sets, medical facilities and food items will be made available in advance in each district. Along with this, army’s help can also be taken if needed. The Delhi government has appealed to the people to stay away from low-lying areas and water-logged places during heavy rains and in case of any emergency, contact the helpline immediately so that timely help can be provided to the people and any danger can be dealt with in time.
