June 12, 2026 by Uma Shankar

The situation of TMC is worsening in West Bengal. The phase of rebellion and resignation continues in the party, one by one many big and close leaders of Mamata Banerjee are resigning from the party. Now 19 rebel TMC MPs have demanded to form a separate faction. For this he wrote a letter to the speaker. On May 18, 19 TMC MPs had submitted this letter to the Lok Sabha Speaker. At the time this letter was handed over, Kakoli Ghosh was the Chief Whip of TMC. Now these 19 MPs have signed this letter. These 19 MPs include big names including Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, Yusuf Pathan, Sayoni Ghosh, Mala Roy.

On May 20, TMC wrote a letter to the Speaker saying that Kalyan Banerjee was being made the Chief Whip in place of Kakoli. It is important and noteworthy that Kakoli had given the letter of 19 MPs on May 18 itself. That is, before TMC’s letter to remove itself from the post of Chief Whip, it is also written in the letter that under Para 4 and Para 4(2) of the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution, his number is 19 out of 28 i.e. two-thirds. In such a situation, considering them as a separate group, arrangements should be made to sit separately from the opposition place.

Why are TMC leaders leaving the party?

Rebel TMC MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar said that separate seating arrangements should be made in the Lok Sabha for a group of 19 MPs. After his demand, there were murmurs of separation in the parliamentary camp of the party. This step of forming a separate party by the rebel leaders was taken due to the disappointing performance of the party in the recent West Bengal Assembly elections. Many leaders say that there is increasing internal tension within TMC, due to which it has become difficult to work in the party.
