The show started in 1987
Director Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayana was started in the year 1987. This show used to be the most popular show of Doordarshan channel. Every character of this show had made a special place for himself in every household. You will be surprised to know but people started considering actor Arvind Trivedi, who played the role of Ravana in the show, as the real Ravana, hence, when Ravana was killed in the show, there was mourning in the entire village of Arvind. Not only this, the character of Ravana had left such a deep impression on the audience that people started calling his children as Ravana’s children and his wife as Mandodari.

Wonders of practical visual effects
Even today, many people call actor Arun Govil, who played the titular character in the show, by the name of Shri Ram. The magic of this show was such that people used to sit in front of the TV with their heads covered and slippers removed. When this show aired, people used to close their offices and shops and reach home as quickly as possible, so that they do not miss any scene of the show. To film the sea scene in Ramayana, shooting had to be done in Chennai, because such clean water was not found anywhere else, for which the entire unit of the film went to Chennai for shooting. Practical visual effects were used in the scenes of the film. Most of the props in the show were made by hand.
According to a report, Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayana had given a revenue of Rs 23 crore to Doordarshan channel through its first telecast. Along with this, do you all know that all the actors of this show were asked to eat satvik food. A contract was signed with everyone that people associated with this show could neither eat non-veg nor consume alcohol and cigarettes until the shooting was completed. For the large team of 150 people, only vegetarian food was prepared every day, which the entire crew ate with great gusto.
