
On Friday, the Election Commission has announced the election dates for 24 Rajya Sabha seats falling vacant in 10 states. These elections will be held on June 18. The MPs whose seats are becoming vacant next month include former Prime Minister H.D. Big names like Deve Gowda and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge as well as Digvijay Singh are included.
In a statement, the Election Commission said that Rajya Sabha seats are falling vacant in 10 states where sitting MPs will retire on different dates between June 21 and July 19. Maximum 4-4 seats are becoming vacant in Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat and Karnataka. After this comes Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan where Rajya Sabha elections are to be held on 3 seats each.
Will be able to file nominations till June 8
Apart from this, elections will be held on 2 seats in Jharkhand and one seat each in Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya and Mizoram. Based on the dates released by the Election Commission, the last date for filing nominations is June 8.
Former PM Deve Gowda and Congress President Kharge are prominent among those who retired from Rajya Sabha and both these leaders come from Karnataka. The seats of both the leaders are falling vacant this time. Apart from these, Union Ministers Ravneet Singh (Rajasthan) and George Kurien (Madhya Pradesh), former Chief Minister Digvijay Singh, Congress leader Shaktisinhji Govil and other names are included.
Sunetra Pawar had resigned
The Election Commission never announced to hold by-elections for one Rajya Sabha seat each from Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu. In Maharashtra, the Rajya Sabha seat has fallen vacant after the resignation of Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar. Sunetra entered state politics after the death of her husband and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar in a plane crash in January. She resigned from the Rajya Sabha and became the Deputy Chief Minister of the state. Later she reached the Assembly by winning the by-election from Baramati seat.
According to the program released by the Election Commission, notification for Rajya Sabha elections will be issued on June 1 while the last date for filing nominations will be June 8. The nomination papers will be scrutinized the next day and the last date for withdrawal of candidature will be June 11. Votes will be cast on June 18.
