
The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Monday announced the dates for elections for 27 seats of Rajya Sabha and State Legislative Councils. If there is a contest, voting will take place on June 18. The process includes biennial elections for 24 Rajya Sabha seats from 10 states and three by-elections in Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Odisha. The Election Commission has also issued notification for the elections of state legislative councils in Bihar and Karnataka. The process of filing nominations started on June 1 and the election process is expected to be completed by the end of this month.
For the Rajya Sabha elections, ECI informed that biennial elections will be held for 24 Rajya Sabha seats of Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Rajasthan, Arunachal Pradesh and Karnataka. Apart from this, by-elections will also be held for one Rajya Sabha seat each in Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Odisha, taking the total number of Upper House seats up for election to 27.
The Commission has issued notification for the elections and appointed the Returning Officer and Assistant Returning Officer. Details of these appointments have been published in the Gazette of India and the Gazettes of the respective States.
Where will council elections be held?
ECI has also announced biennial elections for state legislative councils in Bihar and Karnataka. Nine members will be elected from Bihar, while seven members will be elected from Karnataka. There will also be a by-election for an additional seat of the Legislative Council in Bihar. The nomination process started on June 1 at 11 am and will continue till June 8 at 3 pm. Scrutiny of nomination papers will take place on June 9, while candidates can withdraw their nominations till June 11. If there is a contest in the elections, then voting will take place on June 18 between 8 am to 4 pm. Counting of votes will start at 5 pm on the same day.
Election strategies will have to be finalized by June 18
With this announcement, the election process for the vacant seats in the Rajya Sabha and State Legislative Councils has formally begun, paving the way for political parties to finalize their candidates and election strategies before the June 18 elections.
