Rahul Gandhi surrounded on his statement of ‘Idiots’ and ‘Andhbhakts’, Anurag Thakur demands action from Lok Sabha Speaker

July 30, 2026 by Uma Shankar

BJP MP Anurag Thakur has given a breach of privilege notice against Congress MP Rahul Gandhi. By writing a letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, he has accused Rahul Gandhi of using unparliamentary language. Thakur says that during the debate in the House on July 29, Rahul Gandhi used words like Idiots and Andhbhakts for citizens, political opponents and government supporters. Despite opposition from Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju and warning from the Chair, Rahul Gandhi repeated these words. He has called it a case of violation of Lok Sabha Rule 352.

It has been alleged in the notice that Rahul Gandhi made serious allegations against Home Minister Amit Shah without giving prior notice. No document or reliable source was presented in the House in support of the allegations. Anurag Thakur called it a violation of Lok Sabha rules, under which it is necessary to give notice before making allegations against any minister or member.

Accusation of deviating from the topic of debate

It has been said in the notice that Rahul Gandhi raised the issue of conversation with a student and made statements deviating from the main topic of the debate. BJP has called it a disruption in the proceedings of the House and a violation of Rule 352 (viii). The BJP MP has demanded from the Lok Sabha Speaker to accept the notice and send the matter to the Privilege Committee under Rule 227.

A demand has been made for the committee to investigate the entire matter. In the notice, a demand has been made to direct Rahul Gandhi to tender an unconditional apology to the House and Home Minister Amit Shah. Anurag Thakur has demanded removal of Rahul Gandhi’s objectionable comments from the record of the proceedings of the House under Rules 380 and 381.

What else did Anurag Thakur say?

Along with this, he alleged that Rahul Gandhi acted and behaved in the House in such a way that it hindered the functioning of the Lok Sabha members individually and together as a House. He also did not follow the repeated instructions given by the Speaker of the House. Rahul Gandhi has violated the privilege as a Lok Sabha member.

Anurag said, I request that this notice of breach of privilege and contempt of the House be accepted under Rule 222. Objectionable comments should be removed from the proceedings under Rule 380, 381. This matter should be sent to the Privilege Committee under Rule 227 for detailed investigation and appropriate action.
