Questions on fake news, stand-up comedy and OTT content… PIL filed in Supreme Court demanding control

June 27, 2026 by Uma Shankar

A PIL was filed in the Supreme Court against fake and obscene social media content and stand-up comedy shows. The petition has cited the Rs 370 biryani controversy and the stand-up comedy show. The petition demands the formation of a judicial commission to set limits on social media, OTT content and stand-up comedy shows.

Supreme Court Advocate Vishal Tiwari has filed a PIL. In the petition, the court’s attention has been drawn to the insensitive comments made by MBBS student Sejal Pawar.

Referring to the insensitive comments related to male cadavers being used for medical education, the PIL said that cadavers are often considered to be silent teachers who contribute to the advancement of medical science. The PIL states that this controversy has raised concerns among people about the respect for the dead and the standards expected in public communication.

Question on stand-up comedy

Expressing concern over the often defamatory, insulting, vulgar, cheap and useless content in stand-up comedy, Vishal Tiwari’s PIL states that there should be a balance between freedom of speech and artistic expression on the one hand and public decency and social accountability on the other.

He said the persistent trend of insensitive comments in stand-up comedy shows that the Supreme Court’s observations and directions in the Ranveer Allahbadia (related to obscene comments in his show India’s Got Latent) and Cure SMA Foundation cases have not had the desired effect.

Apart from this, in another segment of the show, Himanshu Jangra, a youth from Gurugram, has also come out saying that he had expected physical intimacy from his girlfriend in order to collect Rs 370 for the sponsored biryani.

Fake news mentioned in PIL

The PIL also mentions the fake news and videos being circulated on social media, in which it is claimed that CJI Surya Kant had recently gone to Britain along with the Law Minister and 75 judges and participated in a badminton tournament there.

The PIL also referred to fake news and videos circulating on social media, in which it was claimed that Chief Justice of India Surya Kant recently went to Britain along with the Law Minister along with 75 judges and participated in a badminton tournament.

Last year, in November 2025, photos and videos of the tournament held at Thyagaraja Stadium were shown as a badminton match in the UK, in which CJI Surya Kant and Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal had participated. Even after the clarification issued by the Ministry of Law and Justice, the fake news content was not removed.
