An important meeting of Quad countries was held in Delhi. Foreign ministers of India, America, Japan and Australia participated in this meeting. In the meeting, many major decisions were taken regarding the security of the Indo-Pacific region, energy supply and maritime cooperation. It is believed that these decisions may increase China’s tension, because China is continuously increasing its influence in the Indo-Pacific region. India’s Foreign Minister S Jaishankar, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Japan’s Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi and Australia’s Foreign Minister Penny Wong were present in the meeting. After the meeting, US Foreign Minister Marco Rubio informed about 3 major decisions.
1. Surveillance system will be strengthened in Indo-Pacific
The first decision is to strengthen maritime surveillance in the Indo-Pacific region. Under this, all four countries will connect their monitoring capabilities and share real-time information about activities happening in the sea. This will improve security and surveillance in the entire area.
2. Will work together with Fiji
The Quad will work closely with Fiji to upgrade port infrastructure in the Pacific islands. The Quad countries will work with Fiji to upgrade its port infrastructure. This will be the first joint regional infrastructure project of Quad. Fiji’s location is considered strategically important because it is situated between the sea routes between America, Australia, New Zealand and Asia.
3. Energy Security Initiative in Indo-Pacific
Its objective is to strengthen the fuel and energy supply chain in the region, so that there is no shortage of energy in times of crisis. America will also host the Quad Fuel Security Forum this year. Energy, fertilizer supply and important minerals were also discussed in the meeting.
How can China’s tension increase?
These decisions are being considered as a big message for China. China is already increasing its military power in the South China Sea and claims many maritime areas. Quad countries allege that China is trying to increase its dominance in the sea. China says that its military activities are only to protect its security and sovereignty. In such a situation, strengthening of the Quad monitoring system is not good news for China. China also says that the Quad is trying to stop its growing influence.
The Iran war and the halted energy supply due to the Strait of Hormuz were also discussed in the meeting. Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong said that if the Strait of Hormuz is closed, it could have a major impact on the energy security of the Indo-Pacific region. The Quad countries also stressed the need to keep sea lanes open and safe.
