Putin became the first choice of Indians, how much trust do they have on the world’s big leaders including Trump?

June 27, 2026 by Uma Shankar

In many countries of the world, people’s trust in US President Donald Trump has gone down more than before. This has come to light in a new survey of Pew Research Center. According to the survey, 76% of the people from 36 countries of the world said that they do not have confidence in Trump’s global leadership. At the same time, only 23% people said that they trust Trump’s decisions in international affairs. An interesting result related to India also emerged in this survey. People in India expressed the most trust in Russian President Vladimir Putin among the world’s big leaders.

51% Indians said they trust Putin. After this, 39% people expressed confidence in US President Donald Trump, 34% in Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu, 33% in French President Emmanuel Macron, 29% in Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and 25% in Chinese President Xi Jinping. This survey was conducted between 8 February and 13 May 2026. In this, 42,151 people from 36 countries were interviewed and their opinions were taken.

Why did trust in Trump decrease in India?

According to the survey, Trump’s popularity in India has decreased compared to last year. In the 2025 survey, 51% Indians had expressed trust in Trump, but this year this figure came down to 39%. This means that trust in Trump decreased by 12% points in one year. According to the report, Indians did not like many of Trump’s policies. These include his stance on tariffs (import duties) imposed on other countries, US policy towards Iran and Venezuela, strict immigration rules, decision to close international aid agencies, Gaza war and Russia-Ukraine war.

Only 32% people in India supported Trump’s immigration policy. At the same time, only 28% people considered his policy regarding Iran correct, while only 17% people supported his Venezuela policy. The report also said that Indians did not much support the decision to close down institutions like the American international aid agency USAID. Trump’s policies regarding Gaza war and Russia-Ukraine war also got limited support in India.

America’s image also changed in India

According to the survey, people’s thinking about America in India is not the same as before. The report says that for the first time after almost 20 years, such a huge decline has been recorded in the positive opinion of Indians about America. The report reminded that in 2005, when America started the Iraq War and was being criticized across the world, America still had a 71% positive rating in India. Now this picture seems to be changing.

What is the opinion in other countries of the world?

In the survey, Israel was the country where America and Trump got the most support. There 81% people gave a positive opinion about America, while 66% people said that they have confidence in Trump’s international decisions. However, Trump’s tariff policy was not liked in most countries of the world. Only 18% people supported this policy in the entire survey. In comparison, 32% people said his immigration policy was right.

Does America take care of everyone’s interests?

People from 36 countries included in the survey were also asked whether America also takes into account the interests of other countries while making foreign policy. Its answer was also not very encouraging for America. On an average, only 32% people said that America also takes care of the interests of other countries. That is, most people believe that America gives priority to its interests first while making foreign policy.

Trump’s popularity is lowest in Europe

Trump got very little support in many countries of Europe. People’s confidence in countries like France, Germany and Greece was very low. For example, in Germany only 16% people expressed confidence in Trump. Whereas 15% people expressed trust in Putin and 15% people expressed trust in Netanyahu. In contrast, 72% of Germans expressed confidence in French President Emmanuel Macron.

Less support even in Muslim dominated areas

Trump’s popularity was also very low among the Palestinians of the West Bank and East Jerusalem who were included in the survey. Here only 4% people expressed trust in Trump, while only 2% people trusted Netanyahu. In comparison, about 4 out of 10 people there expressed confidence in Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

What does the survey indicate?

This survey shows that in many countries of the world, people’s thinking about America and its leadership is changing. In India too, trust in Trump has decreased compared to last year, while the most trust was expressed in Putin. On the other hand, Trump’s tariffs, immigration and foreign policy did not get much support in many countries of the world. However, he still enjoys strong support in some countries like Israel. That is, this survey shows that the image of big leaders in international politics is constantly changing and their policies are having a direct impact on people’s opinions.
