Jagannathji is offered rice on Ekadashi.

On the day of Ekadashi, fasting and special worship of Lord Vishnu is observed with great devotion throughout the country. Eating grains, especially rice, is prohibited on this day, but in Jagannath Puri, rice is offered to the Lord on the day of Ekadashi. Apart from this, rice is also given to the devotees in Mahaprasad. Here, eating rice on Ekadashi is not considered a sin but a virtue.

According to the story…

There is a story behind this tradition related to Ekadashi in Jagannath Dham. According to the story, once Brahma ji, the creator of the world, came to Puri to have darshan of Lord Jagannath and receive Mahaprasad, but by the time he reached the temple, the Prasad was over. There were grains of rice left on only one leaf, which a dog was licking. In devotion to God, Brahma ji started eating rice sitting with the dog.

At the same time Ekadashi Mata appeared there. He told Brahma ji that today is Ekadashi and you are eating rice. This is a violation of the fast. Then Lord Jagannath ji reached there and told Ekadashi Mata that no rules apply in front of true devotion. After this Lord Jagannath said that my Mahaprasad will be free from the bondage of every kind of fast and date.

Jagannath ji hanged Ekadashi Mata upside down

God said that priority will be given to devotion and not rules here. After this, Lord Jagannath ji hung Ekadashi Mata upside down behind the temple. Since then, the tradition of eating rice on Ekadashi started in Puri. In the abode of Lord Jagannath, Ulti Ekadashi is not just a tradition but is considered a symbol of living power in Hindu religion.
