Puri Jagannath Rath Yatra 2026: The great festival of Jagannath ji started from today, know the religious importance of Rath Yatra.

Jagannath Rath Yatra 2026: Today is the second date of Shukla Paksha of Ashadh month. Today is a very special day for Odisha as well as the entire country, because from today the holy festival of Rath Yatra has started in Jagannath Ji Temple located in Puri. The Rath Yatra will conclude with the Bahuda Yatra on 24th July. This great festival will conclude on 27th July with the Niladri Bije ritual. During the Rath Yatra, the Lord along with his elder brother Balabhadra ji and sister Subhadra Devi rides on chariots and goes to his aunt’s house Gundicha Devi temple.

During this time, God comes out of the temple and gives darshan to his devotees. Lakhs of devotees participating in the Rath Yatra pull the ropes of the Lord’s chariot during this time, due to which they attain virtue and the sins of their births are destroyed. As per the schedule decided by Chhattisgarh Nijog, Anushthan Sub-Committee and Shri Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA), today There will be a program of pulling chariots at 04 pm. Today Ravi Yoga is also being formed, hence the importance of this Rath Yatra has increased further.

Religious importance of Rath Yatra

According to religious beliefs, every year on the second day of Shukla Paksha of Ashadh month, Lord Jagannath along with his brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra ji visits their aunt’s house Gundicha (temple) Devi. Lord stays and rests for a few days at his aunt’s house. After this he returns to Shrimandir again. In the Rath Yatra, people of every class, caste and community pull the chariot.

It is believed that during the Rath Yatra, one gets great virtue by participating in the Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath and seeing him and pulling the rope. Jagannath Rath Yatra is considered a symbol of devotion, unwavering faith and dedication towards God. For the Rath Yatra, three grand chariots are made from Neem wood. In the Rath Yatra, Balram ji’s chariot ‘Taladhwaj’ (red-green colour) moves in the front, Subhadra ji’s chariot ‘Darpadalan’ or ‘Padmarath’ (blue-black color) in the middle and Jagannath ji’s chariot ‘Nandighosh’ or ‘Garudadhwaj’ (red-yellow color) moves behind.
