Chief Minister’s Health Scheme proved to be a boon for 37-year-old Gurpreet Kaur of Bathinda, Punjab. Gurpreet Kaur was suffering from a serious heart disease. When he discovered that he had a large hole in his heart, he not only faced a serious health challenge but also had to worry about the huge expense of the treatment. But with the successful treatment at AIIMS Bathinda and the support of Chief Minister Health Scheme, he got a new chance in life.
Till now, Gurpreet’s life was going on normally revolving around taking care of his family and domestic responsibilities. No one had any idea that she was suffering from a heart disease since birth, which remained undetected for years.
Had a large atrial septal defect of 22 mm
During the examination, doctors found that he had a large atrial septal defect (ASD) of 22 mm between the upper two chambers of his heart. Due to this, there was an imbalance in blood flow and extra pressure was being put on the heart. If it is not treated, it could later lead to serious complications like heart failure.
As soon as the disease was discovered, an atmosphere of worry arose in the family. On one hand there was concern about health, on the other hand the cost of treatment was also a big challenge. Gurpreet Kaur says, the first thought that came to my mind was the cost of treatment. I was worried how we would be able to afford so much. It seemed as if our family was at a very difficult juncture in life.
Experts at AIIMS Bathinda advised a special procedure to overcome this problem. According to hospital records, the procedure was performed under general anesthesia in the cardiac catheterization lab on May 5, 2026. During this, the hole in the heart was closed by inserting a 24 mm Amlitzer septal occluder device.
The family relied on the Chief Minister Health Scheme, under which the treatment cost of about Rs 1 lakh was covered. The procedure was risky and consent documents mentioned concerns such as potential cardiac complications, hemodynamic instability, and the need for serious medical attention.
The doctor did the treatment with the help of the scheme
Outside the cardiac catheterization lab, family members were praying with folded hands. Gurpreet’s husband recalls that time and says, we could only pray. Every minute seemed so long. When the doctor came out and said everything was successful, it felt as if a huge burden had been lifted from our heads.
The procedure was a complete success and there were no complications. For Gurpreet, this was a new beginning towards a healthy future. The financial support received under the Mukhyamantri Swasthya Yojana proved to be extremely important for the family, saving them from huge expenses which could have been unbearable for them.
Punjab Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh said that this case reflects the real objective of public health assistance. He said, no family should be deprived of quality treatment due to financial difficulties. Gurpreet’s health is proof that timely medical care and financial security can not only save lives but also maintain the dignity of families.
Today Gurpreet Kaur, like thousands of other beneficiaries of the Mukhyamantri Swasthya Yojana, is moving forward in life with new hope and better health.
