Punjab civic elections: Semi-final of power tomorrow, tight security arrangements for voting

Voting is to be held for 103 bodies in Punjab tomorrow on Tuesday. 7555 candidates are in the election fray. The State Election Commission has made tight security arrangements for the voting going on tomorrow. 740 polling stations have been declared sensitive and 274 hypersensitive, on which voting will be held from 8 am to 5 pm. This time elections are being held through ballot paper instead of EVM.

On May 26, voting is going to be held for a total of 103 seats of eight Municipal Corporations, 75 Municipal Councils and 20 Nagar Panchayats. 3545567 voters will take part in this voting. This time a total of 7555 candidates are trying their luck in the civic elections. In which 800 candidates are in the fray for 1613 Municipal Corporations, 5142 Municipal Councils and Nagar Panchayat.

Strict security arrangements

The Election Commission is fully alert keeping security in mind during voting. 740 polling booths have been declared sensitive and 274 have been declared hypersensitive. This time 35 thousand employees have been deployed on election duty and 32 thousand Punjab Police employees have been deployed for security arrangements. The counting of votes for these elections will come on May 29, on which everyone’s eyes are fixed.

Bans and strict restrictions on election campaigning

In view of the elections, election campaigning will be completely stopped from 5 pm onwards. In order to conduct the election process peacefully and fairly, the State Election Commission has issued a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) in exercise of the powers conferred under Section 163 of the Indian Civil Protection Code, 2023.

CCTV inside and outside all polling booths

To make the election process transparent and fair, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has ordered that CCTV cameras be installed inside and outside all the polling booths in the state and their recordings should be kept safe for at least one year.

The court has also made it clear that under no circumstances will the relevant footage be destroyed without permission. The division bench of Justice Harsimran Singh Sethi and Justice Deepak Manchanda issued these instructions during the hearing on various petitions related to municipal elections.
