Puja Rules: Standing or sitting… how should one worship in front of God? What is the correct rule in the scriptures?

July 1, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Daily worship has special importance in Hindu religion. We all worship God in the temple of our home. While worshiping, we often remain confused whether we should pray standing in front of God or sitting? Many times, due to lack of time, we fold our hands in a hurry while standing, and sometimes we sit comfortably on a mat. But do you know that some rules for worship have been mentioned in the scriptures and Puranas? Let us know what is the correct rule of worship according to the scriptures.

According to the scriptures, worshiping while sitting is considered best.

According to religious beliefs, it is always considered best to worship God daily while sitting on a seat. At the time of puja, instead of sitting directly on the ground, there is a tradition of spreading a seat made of cotton cloth or mat. It is believed that by worshiping while sitting on the asana, the mind and body remain stable. Therefore, it is advisable to do the puja while sitting during daily puja, mantra chanting, meditation and recitation.

Under what circumstances is worship done while standing?

However, this does not mean that worshiping while standing is wrong. Standing and worshiping on many religious occasions is also a part of the tradition. During Aarti in the temple, while having darshan of God, while offering incense sticks or during special rituals, devotees also worship while standing. If there is no seating arrangement at any place or there is a large crowd, then remembering God and praying can be done while standing.

What is the importance of correct posture during puja?

In religious texts, the special importance of correct posture during worship has been mentioned. It is believed that by sitting on proper posture, the energy of the body remains balanced and the mind remains engaged in devotion to God instead of wandering here and there. This is the reason why saints and sages also used special asanas during meditation.

Can an elderly or sick person worship while standing?

If a person has difficulty in sitting or is elderly or unwell, he can worship God standing or sitting on a chair as per his convenience. According to religious beliefs, God accepts the devotee’s true devotion and loyalty more than external appearances. Therefore, it is not considered wrong to make slight changes in the method of worship due to health reasons.

The most important thing in worship is devotion and concentration.

From the religious point of view, the purpose of worship is to express love, faith and devotion towards God. If the mind is wandering here and there, then merely following the rules does not yield the full results of the puja. At the same time, even a small prayer done with a true heart is considered very fruitful.
