Many myths are popular regarding protein, which is considered most important for muscles. The most common thing in this is that if it is taken in excess then the kidneys start getting damaged. Is this a misconception or true… very few people know this. When it comes to fitness and body building, the focus is on protein. Apart from natural things like cheese and chicken, supplements are also taken to fulfill this requirement. But if someone starts taking a protein diet, the first question that arises is whether it will cause kidney damage.

Dr. Arpit Srivastava (Consultant – Nephrology, Regency Hospital) says that there are many misconceptions spread among people regarding protein. The most common myth is that eating too much protein causes kidney damage in every person. Actually this is not completely correct. If kidney health is good then taking protein in balanced quantity normally does not harm this organ. Protein is an essential nutrient for the body’s muscles, immune system, hormones and tissue repair.

However, people who already have chronic kidney disease (CKD) should consume protein only as per the advice of a doctor or clinical nutritionist. In such patients, consuming more protein than required may put extra pressure on kidney functioning.

Muscle damage- Experts say that many people reduce protein without advice. This can weaken the muscles, reduce the body’s immunity and increase the risk of malnutrition. It is very important to take adequate protein, especially for the elderly and patients on dialysis.

Remember that every person’s protein requirement varies according to his age, weight, physical activity and health condition. Therefore, do not change your diet on the basis of social media or incomplete information.

Protein only for body-builders- There is also a myth spread among the people that protein is necessary only for body-builders, whereas it is not so. It is an essential element for our muscles, immunity and bones. Yes, body-building people need it extra. But it should be present in the right quantity in everyone’s body.

Increases uric acid- it It is also believed that every type of protein increases uric acid. In such a situation, arthritis or pain in bones starts. Experts say that plant protein does not increase uric acid. Those whose uric acid is increasing in their body should stay away from animal proteins. Those who drink alcohol remain at risk of increasing uric acid.

When to take expert advice- If you have kidney disease, diabetes, high blood pressure or any other serious health problem, decide the right amount of your protein only with the advice of a doctor or clinical nutritionist. Correct information and balanced diet is the key to healthy kidneys and better health.
