According to the National Family Health Survey-6 (NFHS-6) released by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of the Central Government, the problem of obesity is increasing among adults in India. The survey found that the rate of overweight or obesity has increased in men and women between 15 and 49 years in the last five years. This increase of 4.4 percent has been seen in men and 6.7 percent increase in women. While in the year 2019-21, 24 percent women were overweight or obese, this figure has increased to 30.7 percent in 2023-24. So many lakh families were included in the survey

This survey was conducted by the Health Ministry during the year 2023-24, in which Mumbai-based International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS) was made the nodal agency.
