Pritam And Pedro Review: Whenever the name of ‘Rajkumar Hirani’ is associated with any project, the expectations of the audience automatically start touching the sky like Munna Bhai and 3 Idiots. Something similar happened with the new web series ‘Pritam and Pedro’ streamed on Jio Hotstar. But Rajkumar Hirani has not directed this series, rather he has only produced it and through this he has launched his son Veer Hirani as an actor in Bollywood. Someone else is sitting on the director’s chair, which is why the light-hearted and smiling flavor of Hirani’s brand is visible in the series, but his signature style is not completely visible.

Story

The story of this series has not been complicated too much, rather it has been kept quite simple and straightforward. Pedro (Arshad Warsi) is the main character of this story. Although he is a crime branch officer, but as punishment he is sent to the cyber crime cell. Pedro is deeply broken in his personal life too. The grief of losing his young son is eating away at him from within, causing a severe strain in his relationship with his wife (Mona Singh). Meanwhile, the son of a senior minister, who was addicted to online gaming, suddenly disappears. Pedro realizes that this case can get him back his favorite crime branch chair.

On the other side is Pritam (Veer Hirani), who is an expert in computer hacking. But his aim is not to solve any crime, he just wants to find his grandfather’s stolen old tape recorder, in which his grandmother’s last voice is recorded. Fate brings these two together. Pedro promises that if Pritam helps him in hacking, he will find his recorder with police powers. Initially formed for profit, this pair gradually turns into a firm friendship. how is the series

Since Rajkumar Hirani is the producer of this series, his inputs and the mood of the story are clearly felt on the screen. In the series, a good effort has been made to raise very important and social issues like gaming addiction of children, online fraud and incompleteness of parents in the internet era. The makers have kept the beginning of the series and its climax so strong that the audience does not get bored watching it. But the director has tried to keep the script very straightforward and simple, due to which when the story progresses from the first and second episodes and reaches the middle part, a slight drag and slowness is clearly felt in the screenplay.

The twists that come at some points seem so easy and natural that it seems as if they have been forced in to take the story forward. The emotional scenes shown between Pedro and his wife should have been given a little more time. But the good thing is that in the last episodes the series picks up its full pace again, due to which the slowness in the middle is completely ignored.

The direction of this series is in the hands of Avinash Arun and Amit Satyaveer Singh. Avinash Arun is known for his excellent camera work and the depth of his characters, and this skill is clearly visible in ‘Pritam and Pedro’. The most interesting thing is that even though this pair is known for its different kind of cinema, in this series they have beautifully adopted that special ‘imprint’ of producer Rajkumar Hirani.

On one hand, Avinash and Amit have kept alive the simplicity and family spirit of the Hirani brand, while on the other hand, they have also added their own touch to it according to the pace of OTT. He has presented the complex world of hacking and cyber crime through very simple and bright visuals, due to which even a common audience gets instantly connected to the story. However, one small mistake made by the directors was that they showed a little haste in connecting the different ongoing stories in the initial episodes, due to which some of the twists seem very easy and filmy. But despite this, the duo of Avinash Arun and Amit Satyaveer Singh should be praised for serving a very entertaining cyber-comedy while maintaining Rajkumar Hirani’s trust and his deep impression.

• Arshad Warsi (Pedro) This is the life of the entire series. The amazing balance with which he has portrayed the pain of a broken father and the comic timing of a clever policeman on screen is amazing. Even when the script is a bit loose, Arshad keeps the audience engaged with his one-liners and screen presence.

• • Veer Hirani (Pritam) In his very debut, he has proved that there is no lack of confidence in his acting. Despite being the son of a big film maker, there is no trace of nervousness or over-acting in his acting. He has played the character of Pritam in a very easy and natural manner. It was not easy to stand in front of a seasoned artiste like Arshad Warsi and deliver dialogues and leave a different impression, but the sweet and sour banter between Veer and Arshad is the biggest soul of this entire show. Yes, Veer may have seemed a little raw in some heavy emotional scenes, but for a first series, this is a very promising start.

Talking about the rest of the cast, Vikrant Massey (Martin) has got very less screen time, but in whatever scenes he appears, he steals the show with his performance. Whereas an amazing actress like Mona Singh has been given a very small and limited role as Pedro’s wife. Apart from this, some such surprise cameos have been included in the show, seeing which you will be happy.

See it or not?

The series only touches the surface of the serious problems of the Internet discussed in the show and does not go into depth. During the third and fourth episodes, the story feels a bit stilted and loose, which could have been made a little more crisp.

Overall, ‘Pritam & Pedro’ is not a very heavy or mind-blowing cyber thriller, and the series itself knows this very well. Producer Hirani’s flavor and Veer Hirani-Arshad’s strong jugalbandi have together cooked such a homemade khichdi, which is a little wet in the middle, but by the end, it improves your taste. Anyway, just as taste is enjoyed only when there are different types of dishes, in the same way every type of content is necessary on OTT, similarly this series creates a good balance between the dark content of OTT.
