NATO has launched its biggest defense plan ever at the 2026 Ankara Summit amid the growing alliance of Russia, China, North Korea and Iran. NATO is now preparing to increase its strength on every front, on land, sea, sky and space. Under this, drones, air and missile defense, space surveillance, weapons production and supply of rare earth minerals will be strengthened. The scope of this scheme extends from land and sky to space and supply chain. Let us understand what this new masterplan of NATO is and how it will decide the direction of future war…

Russia-China alliance a threat of a new era?
During the inauguration of the NATO Summit Defense Industry Forum (NSDIF) in Ankara, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said that the coming together of China, Russia, North Korea and Iran is a matter of concern for the whole world. Russia is spending half of its national budget on its war machine, while China is expanding its nuclear weapons without any transparency.
NATO has now understood that no one country can face this challenge alone. Giving the example of a football team, Mark Rutte said that no team wins just on the basis of one best player, for this the whole team has to play together. Keeping this in mind, NATO has set a target for its member countries to spend 5% of GDP on defense by the year 2035.
China’s strategy to break the rare earth maze
Critical minerals like rare earth elements and gallium are required to make modern weapons, radar, and missile guidance systems. At present, China controls 90% of the world’s supply. China had recently imposed restrictions on the export of these minerals due to the trade war with America.
To break this monopoly of China, NATO has started the ‘Defense Critical Raw Materials’ initiative. It includes 12 countries (Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden and Turkey). Their goal is to store critical minerals, secure the supply chain and promote recycling. G7 countries have already decided that by 2030 the dependence on China for these minerals will be reduced to less than 60% and later to 50%.
Drone Age Initiative: $40 billion plan
The war in Ukraine and the Middle East has shown the world that future wars will be fought with drones rather than fighter jets. Taking a lesson from this, NATO has launched the Drone Age Initiative. Under this project, all 32 NATO member countries will invest a huge amount of $ 40 billion in unmanned vehicles (UAVs) and drone technology in the next five years.
- Target: Its main objective is not only to increase the number of offensive drones but also to strengthen the counter-drone defense system that captures and destroys enemy drones.
- Operators: A target has been set to increase the number of drone operators five times by the end of 2027.
- Marketplace: To rapidly deliver the technology to the military, a new ‘counter-drone marketplace’ will be created, so that member states can immediately purchase NATO-tested systems.
Air Defense and Missile Shield
NATO is going to make its air defense impenetrable. 8 NATO countries have together announced an investment of $26.3 billion in ‘Integrated Air and Missile Defense’. Under this, three big projects were announced:
- Change of surveillance planes: NATO will replace its old American Boeing E-3A Sentry (AWACS) aircraft and purchase 10 Saab GlobalEye surveillance aircraft made in Sweden.
- Marine Surveillance: To gather intelligence, MQ-4C Triton drone aircraft will be purchased, which will continuously keep an eye on large marine areas.
- Logistics and Refueling: The fleet of Airbus A400M transport aircraft and air refueling Airbus A330 MRTT will be modernized and enlarged.
HALO in space and NATO engines on the ground
NATO’s focus is now not only on land but also on space. Under the HALO (Hybrid Alliance Layered Operations in Space) initiative, a network of military satellites is being built to improve communication and surveillance between armies. At the same time, NATO Engine Initiative has been started to take defense production to record level. Under this, a large network of arms factories will be built in all 32 countries so that there is no shortage of ammunition in times of crisis. Apart from this, a platform named Front Door has also been created, which will give a single entry point to defense companies to join NATO.
This mega defense plan of NATO is a clear indication that western countries are no longer taking the threat of Russia and China lightly. From supply chain to space, NATO is preparing itself for future hybrid warfare.
