There is a very small village near the India-China border, in which only 91 people live. This village is now going to become India’s first ‘model border village’. Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinay Kumar Saxena laid the foundation of this project on Wednesday in Chumur village located at an altitude of 16,700 feet. LG Saxena said on social media that this village will be developed under the ‘Vibrant Village Programme’. Its objective is to make the villages located in the highlands on the border self-reliant, weather-resistant, good for tourism and economically strong. Chumur, with 24 families, is the first village in Ladakh to be selected under the ‘Vibrant Village Program’ (VVP) of the Central Government. The main objective of this program is to improve infrastructure, housing and livelihood opportunities in remote border areas.

Village of 91 people on China border
Chumur, a village with only 24 families, is very close to the Line of Actual Control (LAC). This is one of the most remote border settlements of the country. Most of the people here rear Pashmina goats, which are the backbone of the local economy.
It was indeed a matter of pride to have laid the foundation stone of Ladakh’s first Model Border Village at Chumur, under the Vibrant Village Program (VVP) in Changthang district in Eastern Ladakh. Despite being small in size, this village is the center of a major effort to strengthen the population in the border areas. These are the areas where people had migrated due to bad weather, difficult roads and lack of economic opportunities. In recent years, policy makers have paid more attention to maintaining the population of common people in the border areas. He believes that development in such areas should not just mean building roads and infrastructure, but should think far beyond this.
24 houses, seasonal facilities for homestay
According to the Ladakh administration, all 24 families in the village will get climate-resilient houses with thermal insulation walls so that they can withstand the harsh weather conditions of the region.
