Political uproar over Ladki Bahin scheme in Maharashtra, opposition claims – names of 80 lakh women removed after elections

June 1, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Under the Ladki Bahin Yojana of Maharashtra Government, women are given ₹ 1500 every month. Now the names of 80 lakh women have been removed from this scheme. This includes women who have not completed online KYC till April 30. Now after this decision, the total beneficiaries have reduced from 2.4 crore to about 1.7 crore. In this case, the government official said that not only because of not doing KYC, but also because many women did not fulfill the conditions of the scheme.

According to the official, the income of 12 lakh women was more than Rs 2.5 lakh. Here 4.5 lakh women were above 65 years of age. At the same time, 5 lakh women were already taking benefits of the second scheme (Namo Shetkari). He said that the government had given eight months time to the beneficiaries to complete e-KYC. The official said that about 50 to 55 lakh women did not complete this process, while two to three lakh rectified their mistakes during this period.

‘Initiated only for the purpose of getting votes’

The opposition fiercely cornered the government in this matter. Speaking to the media, Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar accused the Mahayuti government of betraying the beneficiaries of the scheme. He said that this scheme was started only for the purpose of getting votes. He warned that the ruling coalition will have to pay the price for angering and disappointing women.

NCP (SP) MP Supriya Sule said that the scheme was implemented in a hurry without properly verifying the beneficiaries at the time of elections. He said in a post on Social Media This shows that there has been a serious collective failure of the government at all three levels, political, administrative and its implementation. This scheme is being implemented with taxpayers’ money. In such a situation, an important question arises whether the government was distributing public money to ineligible beneficiaries for the last one and a half years?
