
Police arrested DMK party MLA G.V. for making derogatory and controversial speech against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay. Markandeyan was arrested on Monday. The MLA’s supporters were protesting and raising slogans. Despite this protest, the police team detained him from his house and later arrested him. This action has been taken on the complaint of an official of the ruling party TVK, in which the MLA was accused of threatening the Chief Minister.
According to the official, the police registered an FIR against Markandeyan under three sections of the Indian Justice Code (BNS) on the complaint of ‘Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam’ (TVK) official P. Kasiram. These sections include criminal intimidation, intentional insult with intent to disturb public peace and spreading false information.
Comment was made on July 18
Kasiram had said in his complaint to the police that while addressing a public meeting at Kovilpatti in the district on July 18, Markandeyan had threatened the Chief Minister. Derogatory remarks were made against him, which were extremely objectionable.
In the viral video of his arrest, the MLA can be heard saying that he cannot be arrested without the approval of the Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker because he is an MLA. The police had to persuade him to take him to the police station, while his supporters were protesting in front of his house.
Arrest made from Tuticorin district
Markandeyan is the second DMK MLA to be arrested from Tuticorin district in just a few weeks. Former state minister Anita R., who represents Tiruchendur assembly seat in the district. Radhakrishnan was arrested on 3 July. He was accused of giving a derogatory speech against Vijay. DMK has condemned this arrest and accused the ruling government of acting out of political vendetta.
