Giving information, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that under the ‘Pradhan Mantri Vikas Bharat Rozgar Yojana’ (PM-VBRY), more than 70 lakh people have got employment across the country so far. He issued incentives worth Rs 2,400 crore to promote 15 lakh new jobs. This major employment-based incentive scheme of the government was launched in August last year.

Its objective was to help first-time job seekers and to increase the scope of social security in different sectors. In an event, Modi sent a stimulus amount of Rs 2,400 crore through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) to the bank accounts of eligible beneficiaries to help create 15 lakh employment opportunities.

Describing the achievements of the scheme, Modi said that so far about 70 lakh new jobs have been created and an equal number of first-time job seekers have been brought under the ambit of social security. He further said that about 20 lakh youth have completed six months in their first job, while about 10 lakh beneficiaries have already received incentive amount under the scheme on completing this milestone. According to Modi, this help is more than just financial assistance. It shows the country’s recognition of the hard work of the youth and the country’s confidence in their future.

Creating employment is a national mission

Modi said that when government, industry and youth work together, the pace of employment generation increases. This initiative is a glimpse of a new India where youth get opportunities, industry is promoted and employment generation becomes a national mission. Modi said that Pradhan Mantri Vikas Bharat Rozgar Yojana is more than just an employment scheme.

It is an initiative designed to strengthen the aspirations of first-time job seekers and build a strong bridge between the industry and the workforce. He said that while many schemes usually focus on either employees or employers, this program supports both simultaneously.

He said that the government stands with the youth who are starting their professional journey and encourages those institutions that create new employment opportunities. Modi stressed that in the last twelve years the government has worked to strengthen every avenue of employment.

Modi said that important efforts have been made in areas ranging from infrastructure and innovation to manufacturing, digital economy, space technology and startups. Initiatives like ‘Make in India’, ‘Vocal for Local’, efforts to take local products to global markets and ‘Mission Manufacturing’ have increased avenues for both employment and self-employment.

Work to modernize EPFO

The Prime Minister said that the government is focusing on linking employment with security, respect and social security. He said technology is being used to modernize the Employee Provident Fund Organization (EPFO), simplify the pension system and increase access to health insurance and affordable healthcare for millions of workers. This thinking is the basis of the labor reforms done by the government.

The Prime Minister also highlighted the increasing contribution of women in India’s economic and social development. Modi stressed that reforms related to night-shift work, promoting work-from-home opportunities and strengthening workplace safety are aimed at further increasing women’s participation in the workforce.

He also stressed the importance of skilled talent, innovation and quality in determining economic success in the twenty-first century. According to him, the countries which have these qualities will get the most opportunities and India has unprecedented potential in these three areas. He said that opportunities in the 21st century will go to those countries that promote skilled talent, encourage innovation and maintain the highest standards of quality. He also said that India has unprecedented potential in these three areas.

14 crore jobs in 10

On this occasion, Union Labor and Employment Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said that about 17 crore jobs were created between 2014 and 2024, whereas 2.9 crore jobs were created in the ten years before 2014. Mandaviya said that India’s employment elasticity between 2017 and 2023 was 1.11, which means that for every 1 percent increase in gross value added, employment increased by 1.11 percent, whereas during the previous governments the employment elasticity was recorded at 0.008. He also pointed to the decline in India’s unemployment rate, which now stands at about 3.1 percent and is lower than the global average of 4.8 percent.
