Plan to crack down on illegal immigrants in Assam, now these rules regarding Aadhar card

June 13, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Himanta Biswa Sarma government of Assam has started cracking down on illegal immigrants. Himanta cabinet has decided not to make Aadhar cards of suspected migrants. Addressing the cabinet, he said that now this card will not be issued to suspected people above 18 years of age in the state. Speaking to the media after the cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that this decision has been taken to prevent illegal immigrants from spreading in the state.

The Chief Minister said that in exceptional cases, the District Commissioner will have to send a proposal to the State Government for permission to issue Aadhaar card. Apart from this, Aadhar cards will continue to be issued to people below 18 years of age. The Chief Minister said that the government will later decide whether an applicant is eligible for Aadhaar card or not. He said that the process of issuing Aadhaar cards in the state has reached the stage where cards have been issued to almost all the eligible people.

He said that in some districts this figure has exceeded 100 percent and it is necessary to identify such people who have obtained these additional Aadhaar cards. The Chief Minister said that this step is being taken to ensure that no illegal Bangladeshi citizen can get Aadhaar card made.

Illegal immigrants made Assam a ‘buffer state’

In fact, illegal movement of many migrants from Bangladesh adjacent to Assam has been going on for years, due to which many social, cultural and economic problems have arisen within the state. Many illegal migrants make their home in the state. In view of this situation, the CM of Assam has taken this decision in the cabinet meeting.

Know when the order will come into effect

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said Aadhaar cards will continue to be issued to members of the tea garden community and Scheduled Tribes as many of them have not yet received the cards. The Chief Minister said that this ban will be fully implemented from April 1, 2027. After that date, Aadhaar cards will not be issued even to people above 18 years of age from these communities.

Himanta Biswa Sarma had already given indications

The Chief Minister had earlier said that the state government will adopt a very strict approach regarding the issuance of Aadhaar card and it will not be easy to obtain this document in Assam. Last year, he had said that the Assam government was considering making stricter rules for issuing Aadhaar cards to adults as part of efforts to curb illegal migration from Bangladesh.
