Pankaj Bhadauria was an English teacher in a school in Lucknow for the last 16 years. Teaching was his profession, but cooking was his biggest passion. In 2010, when ‘MasterChef India’ started for the first time in India, Pankaj also decided to audition for it. But as soon as he was selected, his school management put a condition before him which made the ground slip from under his feet. Pankaj had received an ultimatum from the school – “Either leave the show, or leave your job.”
Why did people call Pankaj a ‘fool’?
On one hand, Pankaj had a secure and well-established career of 16 years, he had a family and a good life, while on the other hand there was an unknown path like ‘MasterChef’ where there was no guarantee of success. Pankaj had told, “That decision was the most difficult turning point of my life. When I resigned from my 16-year-old job for a cooking show, people called me a fool. Everyone was questioning my decision, why are you risking everything for a TV show? What will you do if it fails?”
But Pankaj listened to her heart and set out on an unknown journey. She reached Mumbai from Lucknow. At that time she was one of the 40 contestants who had come to try their luck. Pankaj had said that making it to the top 10 was a big deal, hence becoming the winner of the show seemed like an ‘impossible dream’. But by winning the trophy of this first season hosted by Bollywood star Akshay Kumar, Pankaj not only silenced the critics but also registered his name in the pages of cooking reality show history by becoming India’s first master chef.
