S-400 Sudarshan: India has achieved another major success in the direction of making the country’s air security impenetrable. The fourth squadron of the state-of-the-art S-400 ‘Sudarshan’ air defense missile system from Russia has reached India. According to defense sources, the first consignment of this system has been brought to India by sea ship and soon it will be deployed in the designated operational area of the Indian Air Force.
It is believed that this new squadron will be deployed on India’s western border with Pakistan, so that any air attack from across the border can be immediately responded to.
This missile system is equipped with AI technology
This new S-400 system is equipped with Artificial Intelligence (AI) based decision-support capability. According to senior military officials, this AI technology will help operators identify aerial threats and target them on priority basis. However, the final decision to fire the missile will remain entirely in the hands of the human operator. This system can detect targets up to a distance of 600 kilometers.
There was a delay due to Ukraine war
In October 2018, India had signed an agreement with Russia to buy five S-400 squadrons for about $ 5.43 billion (about Rs 40 thousand crores). Of these, three squadrons have already arrived, which have been deployed in Punjab-Jammu, Rajasthan-Gujarat and Sikkim sectors to form a security shield on the northern and western borders of the country. The delivery of the remaining two squadrons was disrupted due to the Russia-Ukraine war. However, now this process is back on track. It is expected that India will also get the fifth and last squadron by the end of this year.

History was created in ‘Operation Sindoor’
S-400 Sudarshan had proved its infallible firepower during ‘Operation Sindoor’ in May last year. This system had shot down a very important surveillance aircraft of Pakistan Air Force at a record distance of 314 kilometers in the air. This is the longest-range ‘kill’ ever recorded by a surface-to-air missile. In view of this excellent performance, the Defense Acquisition Council (DAC) has approved the purchase of 5 more such additional squadrons from Russia.
Step towards self-reliance through ‘Project Kusha’
To reduce dependence on foreign weapons, India is parallelly working on ‘Sudarshan Chakra’ network and ‘Project Kusha’. Under this, DRDO is preparing a completely indigenous long-range air defense system, which, like Russia’s S-400, will be capable of destroying enemy aircraft, drones and missiles at long ranges. In this indigenous project, India’s leading company ‘Solar Industries’ is associated as the main production partner.
air safety triangle
The Indian Air Force is integrating its S-400 system with medium and short-range missile systems like ‘Akash’ and ‘MRSAM. This will provide a multi-layered security shield to the skies of India which will be impossible for any enemy to penetrate.
