Pakistan, which used to chant ‘Azadi’ in Kashmir, is itself trapped, now PoK is demanding independence from Pakistan!

June 30, 2026 by Uma Shankar

The biggest geographical karma in history! The country which beat the drum of ‘freedom’ of Kashmir on every platform of the world for more than half a century, today the slogans of ‘freedom’ are echoing within its own map. But, this time the people raising slogans are not Indians but those brought up by Pakistan who are now fed up with the oppression of Islamabad. At present, such an unprecedented civil revolution has arisen in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir i.e. PoK, which has shaken the foundation of the military headquarters of Rawalpindi.

There is an old saying in politics and diplomacy – ‘The pit dug for others one day swallows itself.’ Exactly the same thing is happening with Pakistan today. The word ‘Azadi’ which Islamabad had used as a weapon against India, has today become a noose around its neck. Lakhs of people are on the streets in PoK cities like Muzaffarabad, Rawalkot, Mirpur and Kotli. They are now demanding independence from Pakistan. This is not an ordinary demonstration, rather it is a rebellion which has exposed the hypocrisy of Pakistan which had worn the mask of ‘Azad Kashmir’.

Main reasons of rebellion and economic policies

The backbone of this entire movement is ‘Joint Awami Action Committee’ i.e. JAAC. This movement, which started in the year 2023, has turned into such a civil revolution in June 2026, where more than 70 thousand school children, women and elderly people of 10 to 12 years of age are sitting on a dharna in the Idgah ground of Rawalakot. There is no political agenda behind this anger, but hunger and plunder of resources. The first and biggest issue is exploitation of electricity tariffs. You will be surprised to know that PoK generates more than 2,300 MW of clean and cheap hydroelectric power from its projects like Mangala Dam. But the government of Pakistan takes this electricity directly to its Punjab province and sells the same electricity back to the local people of PoK at exorbitant rates. People are demanding that electricity be given to them at the original cost of production.

people on the verge of starvation

Along with this, the historic inflation in Pakistan due to the conditions of the bailout package of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has ended the subsidy on wheat. Flour has become so expensive that people are on the verge of starvation. On one hand, heavy local taxes are being imposed on the general public, while on the other hand, the political elite and leaders are being given unlimited free fuel, luxurious government vehicles and luxurious facilities. This social inequality has added fuel to the fire.

Democratic fraud of 12 refugee seats

The most immediate reason for this movement becoming violent and widespread in June 2026 was a decision of the Supreme Court there. In fact, 12 seats in the 45-member assembly of PoK are reserved for those refugees who left India after 1947 and settled in the main parts of Pakistan. Local people and JAAC allege that these 12 seats are used by Pakistan’s intelligence agency ISI and the central government to form their favorite puppet government. Voting on these seats is not held in PoK, but in different cities of Pakistan. Local people had been demanding abolition of these seats for a long time, but in June 2026, the court declared this quota constitutionally protected, after which the movement turned into a fight for the sovereignty and legitimacy of the entire region.

Pakistan Army’s brutal repression and global concerns

Pakistan’s nature has always been to use force. When the people demanded their basic rights, the Shehbaz Sharif government and the Pakistani army declared this peaceful civil rights movement a ‘terrorist organization’. This organization was banned under the Anti-Terrorism Act. In the first week of June 2026, security forces shot dead Shahzeb Habib, a local businessman and JAAC member, in Poonch area. This incident forced the entire area to smolder. In the violent clashes that followed, more than 20 civilians have lost their lives and the internet has been completely shut down.

Amnesty International has expressed strong objection to this, saying that declaring a grassroots civil organization as terrorist and cutting off an entire region from the world is a gross violation of human rights. At the same time, more than 50 MPs of Britain have demanded intervention from their government in this matter. Apart from this, China is also very scared of this unrest because many big energy projects of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor i.e. CPEC are in this area, which are strongly opposed by the local people due to mineral exploitation and environmental damage.

India’s stance and historical reality

India’s Foreign Ministry has taken a very strict stance on this entire incident. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal completely rejected Pakistani claims and said that as always, Pakistan is resorting to fake news and videos to hide its failures and human rights violations and is making false allegations against India. India made it clear that the international community should hold Pakistan accountable for these atrocities. India’s stand has always been clear that the entire Jammu and Kashmir, including PoK, is an integral part of India.

mention of history story

If we turn the pages of history, at the time of partition in 1947, Maharaja Hari Singh wanted to remain independent, but in October 1947, tribal fighters supported by Pakistan and its army treacherously attacked. To save himself, the Maharaja signed the ‘Instrument of Accession’ with India, after which the Indian Army chased him away. After the UN ceasefire in 1949, this area remained under illegal occupation of Pakistan. According to United Nations Resolution 47, Pakistan had to first withdraw its army from there, which it never did. Today the administrative reality is that under the Interim Constitution Act of 1974, it has its own Prime Minister and President, but the real power lies with the ‘Azad Kashmir Council’ of Islamabad, which has only cheated the people there.

Famous writer and expert on Kashmir affairs, Dr. Aman Ahmed has rightly written in his recent comments that ‘This crisis in PoK shows that you cannot suppress the democratic aspirations of any people forever through constitutional and colonial systems.’ Today, the people of PoK are seeing the development, peace and stability happening in Indian Jammu and Kashmir across the LOC, and that is why posters of merger with India have also been seen in some demonstrations.

These two lines of the famous eighteenth century poet Rangi Saadat Yar Khan fit perfectly into this entire situation, which show a mirror to the current rulers of Pakistan –

β€œThe branch of oppression never bears fruit,
A boat made of paper never floats.”

Today, the real face of Pakistan, which is doing politics of deceit on a paper boat, has become clear cut in front of the world.
