The government of Pakistan has increased its defense budget to 3 trillion Pakistani rupees for the financial year 2026-27. This is about 17 to 18 percent more than last year. While presenting the budget in Parliament, Pakistan Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb said that it is necessary to increase defense expenditure in view of regional security challenges and increasing tension with India. However, despite the big increase in the budget, Pakistan’s defense budget is still about 8 times smaller than that of India.
According to the information, Pakistan has allocated 3 trillion Pakistani rupees for defense services. Apart from this, Rs 10.9 billion have been kept separately for administrative expenses.
The budget is more than last year
This budget is much more than last year’s Rs 2.55 trillion. This is about 16 percent of the total federal budget of Pakistan. This budget is considered to be about 2.08 percent of the country’s GDP.
Emphasis on strength of army
The Pakistani government says that strengthening the army is necessary in the current security situation. Whereas amidst the economic crisis and pressure from the IMF, such a huge defense expenditure can affect the development plans. Due to which the country may have to face problems. Pakistan is already facing economic crisis.
How big is India’s defense budget?
India has allocated about Rs 7.85 lakh crore to the Defense Ministry for 2026-27. If seen in dollars, it amounts to approximately 85 to 86 billion dollars. That means India’s defense budget is about 8 times bigger than Pakistan’s.
India has especially focused on procurement of modern weapons, indigenous defense production, missile and air defense systems, naval expansion and preparations for both fronts with China and Pakistan. India’s strong economy gives it more flexibility in the defense sector.
Big difference between India and Pakistan
Pakistan
- More focus on salary and operation expenses
- limited modernization
- Economic pressure and foreign debt are big challenges
India
- investment in modern weapons
- Emphasis on Atmanirbhar Bharat
- Indigenous Missile and Fighter Program
- long-term military preparedness
Defense expenditure increased amid regional tension
In view of the continuous tension, border security and regional situation between India and Pakistan, both the countries have increased the defense budget this year. Although India has a clear advantage in terms of resources and technology, Pakistan is still struggling with economic crisis and limited resources.
