Pakistan is deeply troubled by India’s decision to stop water. Mehar Ali Shah, Commissioner of Indus Water Commission of Pakistan, for the first time Pakistan The data of less water being received has been released. According to Mehar Ali, about 16000 cusecs less water was released in May this year. This is only the data of Chenab River. Pakistan is still collecting data about Indus and other rivers. Mehar Ali says that 24 crore people of Pakistan are in trouble due to India stopping water.
In an editorial written in Dawn newspaper, Mehar Ali Shah said- A decrease in water flow is being seen from May 2025 onwards. Earlier we thought that it would be cured, but now the figures that have come are quite shocking. After the Pahalgam attack in April 2025, India had suspended the Pakistan water treaty.
India diverted the waters of Chenab
Commissioner of Indus Water Commission says that India diverted the water of Chenab River towards Beas, due to which the water flow has reduced. Due to this, the flow of Chenab River at Marala in Pakistan decreased from 78,276 cusecs to 1,527 cusecs in May 2025 without rain.
Similarly, in December it further decreased to 870 cusecs. This year too, the impact of the decision to stop water was seen. During the same incident in May 2026, water flow near Marala reduced from 21,887 to 5,689 cusecs. If we look at the decrease in numbers, then Pakistan got about 16000 cusecs less water from Chenab.
Before India’s decision to stop water, Pakistan used to get an average of 46,00048,000 cusecs of water.

Why is Pakistan worried about stopping water?
Mehar Ali Shah says that India is trying to divert the waters of Indus, Chenab and other western rivers. For this, dams and other constructions are being done. If this effort of India is successful then Pakistan will not be able to get a single drop of water in the coming days. This water is very important for the 24 crore population of Pakistan.
Apart from this, Pakistan’s economy is also dependent on the water of these rivers. Agriculture is accomplished with the water of rivers, which gives impetus to one-fourth of Pakistan’s economy. If the water crisis deepens, the economy may suffer a setback.
That’s why Pakistan is in tension
Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar accused India of using water as a weapon. Whereas ruling coalition leader Bilawal Bhutto has linked it to the Hormuz dispute. Pakistan says that apart from blocking water, India is troubling India in four other ways. For example-
In Pakistan, when it is time for sowing and water is needed the most, India withholds water.
2. But when the crops are ripe and ready, water is suddenly released, which creates the risk of floods.
