This whole issue started when Mahir shared his experience of taking a short break on the occasion of Bakrid. He told that he had completed all his work before going on leave, yet the untold pressure of the office was still on his mind. Mahir says in her video, Why do you feel so guilty when you take leave while working in a corporate? I am taking paid leave on the third day of Eid. The funny thing is that I had done all my work in advance. I’m not disappearing, just using up my remaining holidays. Still, why do I have a strange feeling of fear and guilt inside me?
He said, this is not just his story, but the story of every employee who writes a long e-mail to his boss for taking leave, as if someone is giving an explanation. Mahir further says, the biggest flaw in this culture is to justify oneself excessively for leave.
Mahir emphasized that taking leave does not mean that an employee is lazy or does not care about his career. He further said, my existence cannot revolve solely around productivity. Taking leave on Eid does not make me lazy or irresponsible. Mahir said, corporate culture has created such a mentality that we feel that even the right to rest has to be earned first, as if it is an award. Some people even shared such stories about their boss that one can get angry just by listening to them. One user told that when he asked for leave, the manager said that you could have done this work even on weekends, why do you need leave. Meaning, weekends are theirs as well as working days are theirs. Another said, you don’t understand the corporate struggles until you have to beg your boss for half-day leave on Sunday to attend your friend’s wedding.
