Raja Parba 2026: India is a country of festivals, where nature, rivers, mountains and land are worshiped by giving them the status of God. Whereas in our society, the topics which are avoided to be discussed openly, are celebrated as festivals in the culture of Odisha. One such unique and progressive festival of Odisha is Raja Parva, which is also known as Raja Mahotsav or Raja Sankranti. This festival not only honors womanhood but also celebrates the fertility of Mother Earth.
It is believed that during this period, Mother Earth undergoes menstruation for three days and during this period she takes complete rest. In the year 2026, this festival will be celebrated from June 14 to June 16, while Vasumati bath will be taken on the fourth day on June 17. Let us know everything about this very beautiful and unique tradition.
What is Raja Parv?
Raja festival, considered the cultural identity of Odisha, is related to Mithun Sankranti. This festival is celebrated every year in mid-June and is considered to signal the arrival of the rainy season. In Odia language, the word Raza is believed to be related to “Rajaswala”, which means the state of menstruation. Through this festival, women’s biological strength, creative ability and their deep connection with nature is honored. This is the reason why this festival holds a special and progressive place in Indian traditions.
Belief related to menstruation of Mother Earth
The most important belief related to Raja festival is that Mother Earth i.e. Bhudevi remains menstruating for these three days. Bhudevi is considered the divine wife of Lord Vishnu. According to the belief, just as a woman symbolizes the power of creation, similarly the earth also nurtures all living beings. For this reason, digging the land, plowing or doing agricultural work is not considered auspicious these days. People believe that Mother Earth should be given rest these days so that she can be prepared for the coming agricultural year.
Monsoon and agriculture have special importance
The arrival of monsoon is considered to be the beginning of Mithun Sankranti. When the first rain soaks the earth after enduring sunlight and heat for a long time, it becomes ready for a new crop and new energy. Raza festival is a celebration of this natural change. It is also considered an opportunity for farmers to welcome the new agricultural cycle. This is the reason why this festival is deeply connected with both agriculture and nature.
Relationship with Lord Jagannath and Bhudevi
The religious significance of Raja festival is also very big. It is believed that this festival symbolizes the worship of Bhudevi, the wife of Lord Jagannath. Even today, the silver statue of Bhudevi is installed near Lord Jagannath in the Jagannath temple of Puri. In the medieval period, this festival became more popular as an agricultural festival and gradually became the cultural identity of the entire Odisha.
Women get the tradition of special rest
The most special thing about Raza festival is that during these three days, women and girls are given relief from household chores. They are given the opportunity to relax, celebrate and spend time with family. This tradition gives the message of respecting women and accepting their contribution.
During Raja Parva, a festive atmosphere is seen throughout Odisha. Girls wear new traditional sarees and wear alta on their feet. Swings are installed in homes and villages, where girls and children enjoy. Traditional dishes also have special importance in this festival of Odisha. Podo Pitha, Chakuli Pitha and many other types of Pitha are made in homes.
Vasumati bath takes place on the fourth day
After three days of celebrations, Vasumati Snan is celebrated on the fourth day. On this day, a symbolic ceremony of purification and bathing of Mother Earth is organized. Women take bath and meditate and the festival ends with special worship.
