Let us know what is the process of selecting a winner and can any common man also get this honour.
How and where can one make nomination?
This year, late actors Dharmendra and Satish Shah are going to be given this honor posthumously for their important contribution in the field of cinema. Stars like singer Alka Yagnik, actor Mammootty and R. Madhavan will also be honored with this honour. These awards were started in the year 1954. This is one of the biggest civilian honors of the country. This honor is given for excellent contribution in fields like art and cinema, literature, medicine, sports, social work, public affairs, trade and industry.
Awards are divided into three categories. First Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan. Apart from all these, Bharat Ratna is also given, which is the highest civilian honor of the country. One of the biggest myths regarding these awards is that only big leaders or people with big names can give names. But this is not true. In fact, any common Indian citizen can nominate anyone for this award. Every year the line of applications for these awards opens on the Ministry of Home Affairs portal of the Government of India. You can also nominate yourself by visiting this.
What needs to be done to get Padma Award?
According to the Government of India, this honor is given for the most excellent in any field. You do not need to be very famous or famous to win these awards. In fact, many times the names of such winners come to the fore, whom people outside their community do not even know. Over the years, many unsung heroes have been given a chance. When thousands of nominations come, investigation is done by the Ministry of Home Affairs. There is a background checking and verification process, which has several stages. Officials often try to know about things like career achievements, your respect among people, your work towards the society. This process becomes quite lengthy because many people apply every year.
What is Padma Award Committee?
The most powerful and important stage is the Padma Award Committee. This committee is formed every year by the Prime Minister of the country, where the Cabinet Secretary is made the head of this committee. The people of this committee include senior officials from the government and past award winners. The committee checks the list and shortlists the names, after which this list is sent to the Prime Minister and the President. The names are announced every year on Republic Day only after the final approval.
Can the government take back the honor given?
This entire process is kept quite private. No voting system of any kind is used. The government never reveals who voted for whom, or whose name was rejected.
The question often arises whether anyone can refuse to accept this honour? The answer is yes. Over the years, there have been many people who either refused to accept the honor or returned the honor. The government can also withdraw the honor given. Although this is very rare, the President has the power to withdraw the honour.
