Bharatiya Janata Party has got a new president in Punjab. Party’s national president Nitin Nabin has handed over the command of the state to Kewal Singh Dhillon. Dhillon’s political history is quite old. Apart from being a politician, he is also a big businessman. His total wealth is said to be around Rs 600-700 crore. Kewal Singh started his political journey from Congress. However, in the year 2022, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. Considering his role in the party, now the high command has given him such a big post.
Kewal Singh Dhillon was born on 16 May 1950 in Tallewal of Barnala district. His upbringing and primary education took place in Barnala only. His political journey started from Congress and he remained associated with the Congress party for a long time. From 2007 to 2017, Kewal Singh was elected MLA from Barnala Assembly constituency twice on Congress ticket.
Defeat in 4 elections from 2017 to 2024
In the 2017 Punjab Assembly elections, he had to face defeat at the hands of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Gurmeet Singh. After this, Kewal Singh contested the Lok Sabha elections from Sangrur in 2019. However, this time also he had to face defeat. Here he was defeated by Aam Aadmi Party candidate Bhagwant Singh Mann.
After this, in June 2022, Kewal Singh announced to leave the Congress Party and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. He contested the Sangrur Lok Sabha by-election in 2022 on Bharatiya Janata Party ticket but faced a crushing defeat. He stood fourth in this election. Not only this, he tried his luck in the party’s Barnala assembly by-election in the year 2024. However, here also he had to face defeat and he remained in third place.
Dhillon is not only a leader but also an industrialist.
Kewal Singh Dhillon is the head of the Dhillon Group. This group has a big business in Punjab and North India. He has been one of the main bottlers of PepsiCo. He has also been honored with prestigious awards like ‘Donald M Kendall Bottler of the Year’ for his outstanding contribution in the business world. Dhillon Group is active in real estate, multiplex (Dhillon Plaza) and many other business sectors.
