Owaisi wants to form an alliance in UP elections, what did Samajwadi Party and Congress say?

June 15, 2026 by Uma Shankar

There are assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh next year i.e. in 2027, hence all the political parties have started preparing for the elections. Recently, AIMIM President Asaduddin Owaisi had said in Lucknow that his party is ready for an alliance to stop BJP from coming to power again, provided we get respect and equal status in the India alliance. There are differences of opinion in the INDIA block on this condition of Owaisi. The paths of both Congress and Samajwadi Party are different.

Congress MP Imran Masood says that the decision on AIMIM joining the India alliance will be taken by the central leadership of the party, but he also made it clear that no compromise can be made on the issue of communalism. He said that it is not possible to oppose communalism on one hand and strengthen it on the other.

‘Only Rahul Gandhi has the ability to defeat BJP’

Imran Masood said that the fight to defeat BJP is between Narendra Modi and Rahul Gandhi. There is no middle path. He said that only Rahul Gandhi has the ability to defeat BJP, hence those who want to defeat BJP should join Rahul Gandhi and support him.

‘Whoever defeats BJP is welcome’

On the other hand, senior Samajwadi Party leader and Rajya Sabha MP Ram Gopal Yadav took a different stand regarding the possible alliance with AIMIM. He said that whatever force will help in weakening BJP is welcome.

India alliance meeting in Delhi

These comments of Masood and Ram Gopal Yadav have come at a time when the India Alliance is rethinking its strategy after the crushing defeat in states like Delhi, Bihar and West Bengal in the last one year. In Delhi and Bengal, India alliance partners Aam Aadmi Party and Trinamool Congress suffered heavy losses, while in Bihar, BJP and its ally Janata Dal (United) won easily.

Last week, leaders of the India Alliance held a meeting in Delhi to review the future direction of the alliance. In which Rahul Gandhi had appealed to the allies to remain united despite the recent failures and argued that if the opposition parties stand together then it will be easy to defeat the BJP.

TMC, RJD and SP warned

Rahul Gandhi also warned TMC, RJD and SP that traditional politics and campaign methods will no longer work. He said that these were effective only when the state provided an environment of fair competition. Now there is no such environment. Emphasizing the role of Congress, Gandhi said that the party is ready to drink all the poison being spread by BJP and will continue to lead the fight of the opposition.

In the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, AIMIM along with smaller parties had formed the Partnership Parivartan Morcha. This alliance had contested elections on 94 seats, but was not successful in winning even a single seat and got only 0.49 percent votes.
