Mystery of Brahmarakshas: Grandmothers often tell ghost stories to children at home. According to the scriptures, ghosts and spirits exist, but apart from these there are also Brahmarakshasas. Most of us must have heard or read something about Brahmarakshas at one time or the other, but very few people have accurate information about him. Brahmarakshas are considered very powerful.
It is believed that they have special demonic powers. These are different from common ghosts or common demons. There are beliefs that the souls of educated Brahmins, priests and scholars or gurus are Brahmarakshasas. Among these, only those who have misused knowledge during their lifetime become Brahmarakshasas. After death, due to these serious crimes, they become Brahmarakshasas.
Origin of Brahmarakshas
The word Brahmarakshas originates from two words of culture. One of these is Brahma i.e. Brahmin or a person associated with the Vedas and the other is Rakshas i.e. demon or evil spirit. In this way, Brahmarakshasa is said to be a demonic soul, who was once a learned Brahmin, but due to his sinful deeds and bad conduct, he had to become a cursed soul.
According to Garuda Purana…
Brahmins who are concerned with the works of purity, selflessness and spreading knowledge do not do their work honestly. Use your knowledge for the purpose of attachment, lust or longing. They have to suffer the consequences of their deeds after death. The real reason behind his becoming a Brahmarakshasa is considered to be his sin of pride. It is clearly written in scriptures like Garuda Purana that if a Brahmin distorts or gives the knowledge of the holy scriptures in a wrong way or misuses his knowledge, then he becomes a Brahmarakshasa.
The soul wanders in the forests
Apart from this, those who commit murder, betray students or gurus or misuse temple funds also become Brahmarakshasas. According to Hindu mythology, cursed souls wander alone in the forests in the form of Brahmarakshas. Brahmarakshas are generally described as very tall, thin and lean. Their skin is pale, ashy or quite black.
