‘Operation Crown Prince’ in Bengal, how TMC, which was in power for 15 years, disintegrated in a month?

June 4, 2026 by Uma Shankar

After the defeat of Trinamool Congress in the West Bengal Assembly elections, the party’s troubles are continuously increasing. The script of difficulties after the defeat was not written in Kolkata, but in Delhi. It started in Banga Bhawan in Delhi. On May 22, there was a meeting between rebel Trinamool MLA Ritabrata Banerjee and Chief Minister Shubhendu Adhikari at Banga Bhawan. Ritabrata Banerjee had termed this meeting as a coincidental meeting.

But the fruits of this chance meeting in Delhi were visible in Kolkata and TMC 58 MLAs claimed control over the party and elected Ritabrata Banerjee as the leader of the legislative party and the Speaker of the Assembly hurriedly approved it. After breaking ties with Congress, Mamata Banerjee founded Trinamool Congress in January 1998 and this was the first split in Trinamool Congress after the establishment of the party.

On May 4, after being in power for 15 years, Trinamool Congress suffered a crushing defeat in the assembly elections. From then onwards discord started emerging in the party. Voices started being raised in the party against the interference and interference of Mamata Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee in the decision-making process of the organization and the party and the dissatisfaction in the party increased.

Displeasure seen among MLAs in Mamta’s meeting

A meeting of newly elected MLAs was held on 6 May. In this meeting, Mamata Banerjee asked Abhishek Banerjee to stand up and congratulate him for his role in the election campaign. Its purpose was to acknowledge his contribution, but voices started being raised against it and party MLAs started raising the voice that the party was narrowing around one family.

On May 19, dissatisfaction came out openly in Trinamool Congress. In the party meeting, Ritabrata Banerjee and Intali MLA Sandipan Saha criticized the announcement of Falta MLA Jahangir Khan’s withdrawal from the re-election and questioned the party as to why they were not expelled from the party. Since Jahangir Khan was considered close to the party’s national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee. His criticism of this was considered as criticism of Abhishek Banerjee. Although party leader Kunal Ghosh also expressed concern, he distanced himself from the rebels.

Meeting of Ritabrata and Shubhendu in Banga Bhawan

On May 22, Ritabrata Banerjee reached Delhi to complete the formalities after the end of his tenure as Rajya Sabha MP, but in the afternoon he met Chief Minister Subhendu Adhikari at Banga Bhawan. After that the speculations intensified.

On May 25, fake signatures of several Trinamool Congress MLAs were forged on documents related to the legislative party in the Assembly and handed over to the Assembly Speaker. Due to this, dissatisfaction against the party came out openly.

On May 27, Sandipan Saha and Ritabrata Banerjee met the Assembly Speaker and accused him of forgery of signatures of the MLAs. After that the Assembly Secretariat filed a case against it and handed over the investigation to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). The CID interrogated the MLAs for the next two days. After that the investigation took a political color.

Attack on Abhishek, rebellion intensifies

On May 30, Abhishek Banerjee visited Sonarpur. The mob attacked him. Due to this, politics became more intense. On May 31, Mamata Banerjee called a meeting of newly elected MLAs, but very few MLAs attended it. Rebel MLAs of Trinamool Congress started Operation Crown Prince campaign. The rebel 58 MLAs presented the claim of a separate group, which was accepted by the Speaker of the Assembly. At the same time, Trinamool Congress MLAs attended the meeting of CM Shubhendu Adhikari in the Secretariat. In this way the story of rebellion that started from Delhi ended in the Assembly.
