Have you ever heard someone say that “a crocodile cries while eating its prey”? Due to this belief, the famous English idiom Crocodile Tears i.e. false tears became popular. For years, people have believed that a crocodile cries out of remorse or sadness after killing its prey. But the reality is completely different from this. According to scientists, the crying of crocodile is not related to emotions, but to a natural process of its body.
Actually, crocodile does not shed tears for emotional reasons like humans. When it swallows its large prey, there is a lot of pressure on the muscles of its jaws. This pressure affects the special glands present around his eyes, due to which fluid starts coming out from there. It looks exactly as if the crocodile is crying, although it has nothing to do with sadness or regret.
Why do crocodile’s eyes water?
This is why the proverb ‘Crocodile Tears’ is used to describe people who show sadness but in reality their feelings are not true. Although this phrase is popular, it does not accurately reflect the crocodile’s behavior. If we talk about its hunting method, the crocodile is a great example of patience. It can remain almost completely hidden in the water of a river, lake or marshy area without moving for hours. Often only its eyes and nose are visible on the surface of the water, due to which the prey is not even aware of its presence.
As soon as any animal or bird comes to the shore to drink water or shows carelessness, the crocodile attacks in a moment. Its attack is so fast that the victim does not get a chance to recover. Within a few seconds, it grabs the prey with its strong jaws and drags it underwater. The biggest strength of the crocodile is its jaws. According to scientists, its biting ability is among the most powerful creatures in the world. Once its jaws close on a prey, it becomes very difficult to escape from them. This is the reason why even big animals cannot easily escape from its grip.
Interestingly, the muscles that close the crocodile’s jaws are very powerful, but the muscles that open them are weak. That’s why experts sometimes tie his mouth with strong tape or rope for safety. However, doing so is extremely risky and common people should never try it. The crocodile does not just rely on strength to hunt, but it also waits for the right time. Many times he remains completely silent for hours and attacks only when he sees every possibility of success. This is the reason why he is considered the most patient and clever hunter of nature.
Due to living in water, its body has also developed accordingly. Its eyes, ears and nose are located in the upper part of the head, due to which it can keep an eye on the activities around it even while keeping almost the entire body under water. Due to this, the prey does not become aware of its presence and the crocodile gets full advantage of attacking suddenly. Another interesting fact is that crocodile can survive without food for a long time. His body uses energy very slowly, so after eating a full meal he can go without eating for several days, and in some circumstances, several weeks.
