During summer, if you go near any village, farm or pond, you will often see buffaloes lying comfortably in the mud. Many people seeing this think that perhaps buffaloes like dirt or they do not take care of cleanliness. But the truth is completely different from this. Rolling in the mud of buffaloes is not a habit or hobby, but a very important need of their body.
In fact, mud is no less than a natural protective shield for buffaloes. It protects them from heat, protects their skin and also keeps them away from many types of insects and parasites. In simple words, mud is a kind of natural spa for buffaloes, which helps in keeping them healthy and comfortable.
The easiest way to get relief from heat
The body color of buffaloes is dark black and this color absorbs a lot of heat from the sun, hence their body gets heated quickly in strong sunlight. Apart from this, buffaloes have very few sweat glands in their body. Like humans, they cannot cool their body by sweating excessively. This is the reason why when the temperature increases, buffaloes take help of water or mud. When they sit or lie down in the mud, the moisture present in it slowly expels the excess heat from their body. Due to this, their body temperature remains balanced and they get relief from heat.
Protection from Insects and Parasites
The thick skin of buffaloes can be attacked by many types of insects and parasites. Ticks, lice, flies and mosquitoes are prominent among them. These creatures not only harass the buffalo, but also sometimes become the cause of spread of diseases. When a buffalo rolls in the mud, a layer of mud gets deposited on its entire body. This layer acts like a shield. Due to this, many parasites are not able to reach the skin and those which are already present are also harmed. When this mud falls off after drying, many insects also get removed along with it.
Helpful in keeping skin healthy
Mud not only provides relief from heat but also plays an important role in skin care. Its moisture does not allow the buffalo skin to dry and helps in keeping it soft. Apart from this, it can also reduce itching and burning caused by bites of mosquitoes or other insects. Sometimes mud also proves useful in preventing minor problems occurring on the skin.
Nature has given a unique solution
In the animal world, every organism has developed different ways of living according to its environment. Rolling in the mud is also a natural remedy for buffaloes. This is a very effective way of keeping their body cool, protecting their skin and protecting them from many types of problems. Seeing this, one might think that the buffalo is living in filth, but in reality it is fulfilling the needs of its body. Nature has given him such behavior which is very important for his health and life.
