One of these unique creatures is the red-lipped batfish. At first glance, it feels as if someone has applied bright red lipstick on her lips. This unique feature makes it one of the most interesting marine fishes in the world.
We are talking about the red-lipped batfish, whose scientific name is Ogcocephalus darwini. This fish is found in the marine areas around the Galapagos Islands located in the Pacific Ocean. It was named “batfish” because its head is broad and flat, somewhat reminiscent of the shape of a bat. The structure of its body is quite different from that of other fishes, due to which it is immediately recognized in the world of marine creatures.
Nature gave this fish a special weapon
The most interesting thing about this fish is that it does not keep swimming continuously like normal fish. While most fish swim in water with the help of their fins, the red-lipped batfish prefers to walk on the bottom of the sea. Its pectoral and pelvic fins are so strong that they act like little legs. With their help it moves slowly on the sea floor.
Scientists believe that in this way they save a lot of energy, which proves to be more effective while searching for prey. Generally this fish is found in areas with a depth of 20 to 40 meters. However, in some cases it has been observed up to a depth of about 100 meters. Very little light reaches the depths of the ocean, so the creatures living here have adapted themselves to the special conditions. The bright red lips of the red-lipped batfish are also thought to be part of this adaptation.
According to experts, its red lips can play an important role in reproduction and mutual communication. Bright colors easily attract attention in low-light environments, helping to identify and attract mates. This is the reason why its red lips remain an interesting subject of research for scientists also. Apart from this, its unique shape makes it very attractive in front of the camera, due to which its pictures and videos often go viral on social media.
What is the nature of this fish?
There is a small special organ present on the head of this fish which is called Illicium. This is actually a kind of natural “fishing tool”. There is an attractive bait-like part at its end which it keeps shaking. Due to this action small fishes, crustaceans and other marine creatures get attracted towards it. As the prey approaches, the red-lipped batfish quickly opens its mouth and catches it. This is a very effective and interesting way of hunting.
If we talk about its size, the length of an adult red-lipped batfish can be around 35 to 40 centimeters. The color of its body appears brown, orange, pink or light red. This color helps it to hide easily in the environment of the seabed, due to which it remains safe from the eyes of predators.
In terms of nature, this fish is considered quite peaceful. Instead of running here and there fast, it is seen moving slowly. However, if it senses any danger, it can change its location at a comparatively faster speed with the help of its strong fins.
