In the desire of better salary, good post and advancement in career, people often decide to change jobs. In most of the cases this step proves to be correct, but sometimes fate cheats us like this. About which we have never thought. One such experience was shared by a professional on Reddit these days, which attracted the attention of thousands of people.
This post was shared by a user named @Dharmocracy0593 in Reddit’s r/IndianWorkplace community. In his post, he wrote that after getting 30% more salary, he left his old job and joined a new company, but the happiness of the new beginning did not last long. Just three months after joining, the company conducted mass layoffs and he too lost his job.
Why did you leave the job?
In the post, he wrote that he has been working as a content and product marketing manager in the B2B SaaS and AI sector for more than 8 years. A few months ago, he found a good opportunity for him to get a salary increase of about 30 percent at Wayground (earlier Quizizz), so he decided to join the new company without much delay.
However, for this job he had to go and live in another city because according to the company policy it was necessary to work from the office five days a week. The good thing was that the company bore the entire expense of his shift. This included air tickets, expenses for sending household goods from one city to another, money for packing and moving services and even the amount of brokerage paid for the new house. This made him feel that the company takes full care of its employees.
He told that during the interview he was informed that the company is now making a big change in its business model. While earlier its focus was more on B2C, now it is working rapidly towards strengthening the B2B business. This was a new experience for him too, but he quickly adapted himself to the new environment. Bande wrote that he started working on many new content projects along with the team. He felt that there would be good opportunities for him in the coming times and he would be a part of the company’s growth. But after some time suddenly everything changed.
This is how the new company showed the way out
Even before the completion of three months, the company announced restructuring on a large scale. Under this process, about 15 percent of the employees were shown the door. Unfortunately, he was also among those who lost their jobs. He told that according to some people working inside the company, this was the biggest layoff in the history of the company. Its impact was not limited to just one department. Many entire teams were eliminated. Experienced engineers, new employees coming from renowned institutes and professionals having many years of experience also became victims of this decision, that is, it was not a matter of the performance of any one person, but was the effect of a big decision of the company.
After losing his job, now his biggest concern is to find a new job. He told that in the last eight years he has worked in six different companies. His average tenure in each company was one to one and a half years. Now he fears that this tenure of only three months might go against him while giving an interview for a new job.
A large number of people gave their opinion on this post. Most of the users said that there is no fault of the employee in this matter. He believed that if there is a large-scale layoff in a company, it should not be linked to personal performance. Many people advised to tell the whole thing clearly during the interview and also tell that the company had laid off a large number of employees simultaneously during the restructuring.
