Oman playing games with Iran? Despite IRGC threat, more than 70 ships were evacuated from Hormuz

June 25, 2026 by Uma Shankar

A major heartbeat of the world economy currently rests on a narrow sea route in the Middle East. This route is the Strait of Hormuz, through which about 20 percent of the world’s oil and a large amount of natural gas passes. In recent times, due to increased tension between Iran and America, it was feared that Iran might close this route. If this had happened, there could have been a huge jump in oil prices all over the world.

Meanwhile, an interesting development has come to light. Iran’s powerful military unit IRGC was continuously giving strict statements that if necessary, the Strait of Hormuz could be closed. Is in talks regarding toll system in Oman and Iran. But, despite these warnings, Oman, in collaboration with international maritime agencies and shipping companies, helped more than 70 ships pass safely through its territorial waters.

How is the geographical location?

According to S&P Global, there were 78 arrivals and departures of ships on June 24, the most since the war began. These included 10 crude oil tankers, including five large ships that can carry up to 2 million barrels of oil. However, this number is much less than the more than 130 ships passing every day before the war. Actually, the geographical position of the Strait of Hormuz is such that on one side of it is Iran and on the other side is Oman. Therefore, any kind of obstruction in this route first affects Oman.

Could be part of the strategy

Oman has long presented itself as a balanced and peace-loving country in the region. This is the reason why he has often played the role of mediator between America and Iran. According to reports, talks are also going on between Oman and Iran regarding sea routes and movement of ships. In such a situation, Oman is trying to ensure that despite increasing tension in the region, trade and oil supply is not affected. The safe passage of more than 70 ships is being considered a part of this strategy. If Oman maintains smooth movement of ships even amidst tension, then the worldwide oil market can get a big relief. But if the situation worsens, its impact can be felt from the prices of petrol and diesel to the economy across the world.
