ODI World Cup 2027: ICC sets cut-off date, will 2-time champion team be out of World Cup 2027?

July 21, 2026 by Uma Shankar

ODI World Cup 2027, Cut-Off Date For Direct Qualification: The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced the process and last date for direct qualification for the ODI World Cup 2027. With the arrival of this ICC rule, the two-time former World Champion team is once again in big danger of being out of the World Cup. ICC has fixed 30 September 2026 as the cut-off date to achieve direct qualification. The teams topping the ICC ODI rankings till this date will get direct tickets to the World Cup.

How does the rule of direct qualification work?

The rules for achieving direct qualification in the ODI World Cup are very clear. Under ICC rules, the Full Member countries hosting the tournament qualify directly. On this basis, South Africa and Zimbabwe have already confirmed their places for the 2027 World Cup. Excluding the host countries, the top-8 teams of the ICC ODI rankings as of the cut-off date will directly make a place in the tournament.

The places of these teams are almost confirmed

According to the current ranking, apart from hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe, direct qualification of India, New Zealand, Australia, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and England is considered certain. At the same time, Afghanistan (at number 8 in the ranking) and Bangladesh (at number 9 in the ranking) have the highest chances of capturing the 9th and 10th spots. But a big threat is looming over the former two-time world champion team West Indies.

Why is West Indies in danger?

If we look at the latest ICC ODI rankings, the Caribbean team is at 10th position. In such a situation, if West Indies is not able to make a big improvement in its ranking before 30 September 2026, then it will once again have to play difficult qualifier matches to make a place in the main tournament. Earlier, the West Indies team had also failed to qualify for the 2023 ODI World Cup played in India. At the same time, till this cut-off date, West Indies will get to play only 3 ODI matches.
