
The Government of India has taken a strict stance against Meta in the matter of paid advertisements related to Child Sexual Exploitative and Abuse Material (CSEAM) on Instagram. According to sources, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has issued a notice to Meta. In which it has been directed to immediately remove all such advertisements and content on Instagram, which promote access to or help in making available child sexual abuse material.
According to sources, the government has also sought detailed clarification from Meta in this matter. The government has given seven days to give clarification. The ministry wants to know how such advertisements appeared on big social media platforms like Instagram, what security measures were in place to stop them and what steps the company will take to prevent such incidents in future. Now all eyes are on how META responds to the government’s questions and what kind of reforms the company announces in its ad review system.

Government angry over obscene content
In fact, the central government has expressed displeasure over obscene content on Instagram. Recently, Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnav had instructed the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) to summon Meta. The Union Minister had directed officials to summon Meta in the case of Instagram ads promoting child sexual abuse material in India. The government is concerned about the online safety of children and the accountability of the platforms.
