
DK in Karnataka Shivkumar has been elected the new leader of Congress Legislature Party (CLP). He is going to become the next Chief Minister of the state. The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled to take place on June 3. Recently Siddaramaiah had resigned from the post of Chief Minister. On Friday, Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot accepted the resignation of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and dissolved the Council of Ministers.
Till now, Shivakumar was serving as the Deputy Chief Minister of the state. At the Congress Legislature Party meeting held in the conference hall of Vidhana Soudha (Legislative Assembly), D.K. Shivakumar was unanimously elected the new Chief Minister of Karnataka. The meeting was supervised by K.C. Venugopal and Randeep Surjewala. Ahead of the important meeting, Karnataka Congress leaders, MLAs and party workers welcomed Venugopal and Surjewala at the Kempegowda International Airport.
At the same time, discussions are still going on whether the swearing-in ceremony should be held at Raj Bhavan or on the grand stairs of Vidhan Soudha. However, preparations are being seen near Vidhana Soudha.
D.K. Shivkumar met the Governor
Earlier, Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) President D.K. Shivkumar met Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot at Raj Bhavan on Saturday afternoon. The meeting took place on Saturday evening ahead of his formal election as the leader of the Congress Legislature Party. According to sources, Shivakumar held informal discussions with the Governor regarding the swearing-in of the new Chief Minister and the Council of Ministers, as the Governor is likely to visit Dharmasthala in Dakshina Kannada district on Sunday to attend an event involving the Vice President.
Effort to join the new cabinet
In Delhi on Friday, both Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar held discussions with the Congress leadership regarding the formation of the new cabinet and the process of transfer of power. Aspirants for ministerial posts have intensified their lobbying efforts in front of the party high command in New Delhi. While some ministers of the dissolved Council of Ministers are trying to cement their place in the new cabinet, this time the MLAs hoping to get a place in the cabinet have also reached the capital.
Discussion of having more than one Deputy Chief Minister
There is strong speculation that this time there may be more than one Deputy Chief Minister in the Congress government of Karnataka. There is also discussion that many ministers of Siddaramaiah’s cabinet may not be included again. According to sources, discussions are still going on with the party leadership regarding the formation of the cabinet. However, the picture is not completely clear yet.
