Upasana Singh on Maine Pyaar Kiya: The film ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’, directed by Sooraj Barjatya, proved to be a milestone for Salman Khan and Bhagyashree. This film, released in the year 1989, was Salman Khan’s debut movie as a lead actor. After the release of this film, people liked the pairing of Salman and Bhagyashree a lot. However, very few people know that before casting Bhagyashree, the makers initially wanted to cast Upasana Singh for the role of ‘Suman’. But because of his height this film was lost from his hands. Recently, during an interview, Upasana told how this role slipped away from her hands and she later talked to Sooraj Barjatya’s father Raj Kumar Barjatya about this decision.
Bhagyashree was not the first choice for the 1989 blockbuster movie ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’. Rather, the makers wanted to replace her with Upasana Singh. He had also given an audition for this, but due to height things did not work out and then this film fell in Bhagyashree’s lap. Let us know what else Upasana Singh said.
Upasana Singh gave interview
In a conversation with Galata India, Upasana Singh recalled her audition with director Sooraj Barjatya for the film ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’. She said, “At that time I was studying in Chandigarh and my aunty lived in Chembur. I always said that I want to become a heroine. So whenever I came to Mumbai, I used to meet all these directors and producers. So, once I came and met Gupta ji (who handles Sooraj Barjatya’s work). He told me that Rajshree is making a film called ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’ and he will introduce me to Sooraj Barjatya. I told him that I have been doing theater since childhood and he (Sooraj Barjatya) did not take any proper audition, he just asked me to speak 3-4 dialogues and he told Gupta ji that I have been selected.
“The call did not come again”
Upasana Singh further said, “But, he wanted me to meet his father also. Then Gupta ji called me and told me that I have been selected on behalf of Sooraj ji and then I met his father. I went back to Chandigarh, but I never got any call. Then the film was made. I did not go to watch the film for a long time because I was feeling bad that I was the heroine and the film was made without me. I did not tell anyone that I was selected because it felt embarrassing. Was.”
The actress recalled, “A few years later, I worked with Sooraj ji in ‘Main Prem Ki Deewani Hoon’. We were shooting in Switzerland and Sooraj ji’s father told everyone that I was the first choice for ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’. I didn’t even react. I didn’t even expect that he would take my name, but he did, then I got angry and I asked him, ‘Why did you reject me?’ She said that it was because I was taller than Salman Khan. I replied, ‘Sridevi is also taller than him, still she can work with him? Don’t make a fool of me!’ He said, ‘If we had cast you, you too would have left the industry like Sridevi.'”
“Bhagyashree deserved it”
She further said, “I felt very bad at that time. It was a very good film, but I did not watch it for a long time. I just felt that if I had gone to watch the film, I would have bad-mouthed Bhagyashree. But, she did a very good job and that role was for her, although I deserved that role more than her. Salman knew about this.”
